Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,

Due to extenuating circumstances, I am submitting this appeal with the intention of dropping SPAN111, HIST295, GNDS 212 and HIST210; I am doing so with the support of my doctor, my QSAS advisor, my parents, my counsellor, and an academic advisor.

Over the duration of the 2018 Fall term, a plethora of emergency situations occurred. Some of these situations involved my own health and safety, the death of a loved one, and the health of an immediate family member. Furthermore, (and likely as a result of these unfortunate events), I experienced a very serious flare up of pre-existing of a medical condition which left me acutely ill during a demanding time in my academic calendar, at times requiring trips to the hospital and around-the-clock care. Please trust that these situations were extremely serious, and extended far beyond anyone's control.

As a result of these circumstances, I was unable to allocate the necessary amount of time towards the aforementioned courses and fell significantly behind in coursework. I took these classes with genuine interest in the course content, but as the status of my health declined, so too did my attendance and submission of assignments. Unfortunately, the linear structure of history and language courses means that once one begins to fall behind, it becomes increasingly difficult to catch up (with each lesson directly related to, and building, on the previous one).

In order to avoid further complications, I have decided to drop all Winter 2018 courses to allow for proper healing and intensive medical treatment, therefore ensuring long-term academic success for the duration of my undergraduate studies here at Queens. The appeal process is stressful for all involved, and ideally taking this time now will prevent the need for future accommodations beyond those normally granted to me thorough Queen's Student Accessibility Services. It is my hope that this will provide me a fresh start once I resume my studies, and allow me to continue towards my long-term goal of studying Law at Queen's University.
