Subject: Appeal Request

Dear Dr. Stephenson,

I am writing for your help to appeal for a late drop of PHGY 214 (winter 2017) and CHEM 281 (fall 2016) and to receive credit standing in BCHM 218 (winter 2017) and PHGY 214 (winter 2018). I believe that there were situations that were beyond my control which contributed to my grades.

Right before exams of my second year, I was informed my parents would be unexpectedly separating. I found out that my father had multiple affairs resulting in ongoing family conflicts throughout the year. This emotional trauma left me disoriented. I was embarrassed, confused, and unable to cope with my family situation. I was focused on my family and worried about our future, leaving me distracted and unable to focus on my studies. This resulted in a rapid deterioration of my academic performance where I failed two courses, PHGY 214 and CHEM 281, and received a grade of D in BCHM 218.

Originally, I was unaware of resources available and avoided confronting the issues at hand, in hopes of moving on from this troubling time as fast as possible. Since then, I have taken summer courses and expanded to 6 courses in one semester in attempts to make up for my setbacks. As a result, I did poorly on the repeated PHGY 214, which I strongly believe does not represent my academic capabilities. Taking 6 courses in one semester resulted in a daunting exam schedule of six exams in nine days which I believe, in part, contributed to my poor performance. I have taken several upper year courses related to these subjects where I have received a grade within the A range proving my capabilities in this area of studies.

I have since learned how to deal with and process family issues the best I can. I no longer have contact with my father, and although originally very difficult, I am in a much better place. I have come to realize the importance removing toxicity from my life. Almost two years later, and I could not be more-proud of myself. My grades have been in the A range, I am completing my fourth-year thesis project, and have earned co-authorship on three manuscripts. However, I am embarrassed of my transcript and of my family conflicts. I am hopeful that this will no longer hinder my success or opportunities.

I am now ready to fight for my success. I believe these courses in which I am appealing are not a true reflection of my academic potential. I have made an exceptional academic comeback as my grades have improved over the last one and a half years. I have worked endlessly to meet my degree requirements. As a fourth-year biotechnology student, it is with tremendous pride that I am continuing to take a full course load and will be graduating with my honours degree in a demanding specialization program, within the expected time frame given my previous situation.
