Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: I am appealing to drop ECON 212 (F 2017), ECON 222 and SOCY 211 (W 2018). I am also appealing for Credit standing in ECON 241, SOCY 275 (F 2017) and ECON 239 (W 2018).
My extenuating circumstances began prior to coming to Queen's. In first year I struggled with a number of very serious mental health issues and I wasn't being treated at the time. I isolated myself from my care providers and entire support system. I did have a care provider at the time but I wasn't well enough to seek help or to address the problems I had at the time. It was a very dark time in my life.
Second year (2017/18), things got worse mentally and I was living a toxic lifestyle, but I wasn't able to escape it. I had surgery during Reading Week and I was in a cast for 6 weeks. This surgery had complications which made my previous existing mental issues resurface. In terms of severity, my condition in the fall 2017 I couldn't leave my house, I wasn't going out with friends, classes were not a priority at all just meeting the basics of living was a struggle. Winter term 2018, the severity got better but the surgery and the complications afterwards set me back and made things worse. Impact on my studies over the fall and winter term I mentally wasn't in a healthy enough state to attend class, I wasn't sleeping, I wasn't eating, I was smoking a lot, I wasn't taking care of myself, not tending to basic hygiene. Fall 2017 I was able to write assignments and tests just to say they were done but I wasn't able to put any real effort or care into them. Winter 2018, I didn't go to class and after my surgery in February I didn't do anything and I submitted only pieces/partially completed work and half-written tests/exams. I was starting to fall back into the ways from first year. The medication I was on during the last half of the winter term caused me to be too impaired to concentrate on anything.
In the Fall of 2017 (end of October) I sought help from my healthcare provider and began to receive treatment. It has been a long process and I am slowly starting to see good results. It took time for me to get to the root of the issues so I could begin to deal with them and now I am finally seeing progress. My grades from Fall 2018 are a reflection of my hard work and my progress in therapy.
