Petition Letter: Appeal Letter / Academic Plan
To whom it may concern,
My name is Shiyi Huang who is a first year student at Queen¿¿s University in the faculty of arts and science. For the courses of this year, I have attempted BIOL 102, HLTH 101, STAT 263 and PSYC 100 in fall term and I am attempting HLTH 102 and PSYC 100 in this winter term. I am submitting an appeal to drop STAT 263, PSYC 100B, and HLTH 102 late as well as asking for the credit standing for BIOL 102 and HLTH 101. It will be extremely helpful and I will be very thankful if you can grant this appeal.
I had a meeting with Ms. Heather Carter (an upper year academic advisor from the faculty of arts and science) before the deadline of dropping winter courses (March 1st). I learned from her that as long as I am earning less than 18 units, I will not be assessed by the academic progression. Therefore I followed her advice by dropping two of my winter courses (MATH 121 and ENIN 140) before the deadline and making sure that I am only earning 15 units this year (including HLTH 101, BIOL 102, PSYC 100B, HLTH 102). However, I had a meeting with another academic advisor on March 11th and she told me that I received some false information. She said that I could only not be assessed by the academic progression if I attempt less than 18 units. I just learned that since I have attempted STAT 263, the three units will still count towards the total unit. With the help from her, I just discovered that I will be assessed by academic progression since I am attempting 18 units this year. If I learned the information from Ms. Heather Carter earlier, I would drop one more course before the deadline. I recognized that the deadline for dropping courses for this year have already passed, I am appealing with strong wish to drop STAT 263, PSYC 100B and HLTH 102 late so that I will not be assessed by academic progression in May since I only attempt 6 units (HLTH 101 and BIOL 102) this year. Or if you can only permit me to drop one course or three units, I will be saved.
In addition, I am appealing to ask for credit standing for BIOL 102 and HLTH 101. Based on the extenuating circumstances beyond my control, I believed that my academic performance in these two courses could not reflect my academic potential. Other than that, I will reflect on myself over this year and by taking steps leading to my academic success from now on. It will be extremely helpful if there are credit standing for my BIOL 102 and HLTH 101 courses (there are only units but no grade on my transcript). I would be grateful if my GPA could start fresh in September. It will be very helpful if you could gave me the opportunity to be back as a first year student who will work extremely hard to boost up my GPA.
Due to the extenuating circumstances beyond my control, I believe that my academic performance for this year could not reflect my full academic potential. I experienced significant depression and loss of sleep due to various reasons for the past year. Firstly, since one of my relative passed away, I suffered from great sadness and anxiety. I constantly had fast heart rate and sweaty hands causing insomnia. As a result, I was very tired during the day which affected me from staying focus while taking class, doing the assignment and reviewing for the works. Secondly, I had serious cold which caused me to cough from October to January. I felt very uncomfortable while I was sick which affected my academic performance negatively and I was very depressed about that. Since I suffered from the depression and loss of sleep greatly, I was able to ask for documentation from the student wellness center in March which would explain my health issue in detail. Now I am fully recovered with the help from the counciling session from the student wellness center. I am mentally healthy that I move on from the loss of my relative and build new friendships on campus, being happy and sleep well now. I am physically healthy that I am not experiencing any disease now. Starting in March, I realize that my academic performance is improved and I believe that it will be better from now on.
Since I am physically and mentally healthy and I am faithful in my academic potential, I believe that I will be academically successful from now on. I will be very grateful if you can grant my appeal by giving me the opportunity to skip from the academic assessment in May and return as a first year student in September (as I wish before the deadline of dropping courses). I will make sure that I am succeeding academically by working extremely hard and seeking for help from the resources at Queen¿¿s from the professors, student academic success services, peer tutors to the classmates. In the future, I will work hard towards my goal of pursuing the bachelor of arts general degree majoring in economics with the business certificate from Smith School of Business. I even planned out the course selections for my next three years with my academic advisor which would guide me towards success. For this summer particularly, I will be taking MATH121 and WRIT125 as the arts and science online summer courses.
I always believe that I have great academic potential since I was succeeding all the way up to high school. My average in Grade 12 was 81. As these extenuating circumstances have all gone, I believe that it is time for me to reach my academic potential from now on. If you could grant this appeal, I will be very thankful.
I am always willing to do extra work for this appeal. I can ask for a letter from my high school teacher, making donations to Queen¿¿s University and so on. It would be better if we can meet in person to discuss about everything.
Thanks,
Shiyi Huang
