Petition Letter
Petition Letter: This letter is addresses to the Associate Dean (Studies),
I am appealing to drop SOCY 210 (Fall, 2018).
My first semester of second year started out great since I was eager and ready to start school. The beginning of the first semester started out great until mid-November of 2018 came around. It was then that I found out that my grandmother fell ill. At first, I was told that she was going to be okay and that she was not extremely ill, so I decided to stay in Kingston to focus on my studies. Then a week later, I was informed by my parents that she was not doing well at all. At this point I decided that I needed to go and visit her in Toronto which is where she lives along with the rest of my family. So, I went back one weekend, and then she was still sick so I went back again and that is when I started to go to Toronto on a regular basis which was every weekend.
Trying to balance my studies and my family life was very stressful in that time, so when all of this was taking place, my academics was affected by this extenuating circumstance that I had no control over. I managed to pass my other courses but the main course that I seemed to be struggling with was SOCY 210. I found that this course compared to the others had much heavier course material. I would have dropped the course sooner if I had known about my grandmother¿¿s illness but since no one saw it coming, I had no choice but to drop the course after the drop deadline.
I had informed my professor about the situation and I am so grateful that she was super understanding but even then, I realized that I was way to behind and I would not be able to catch up even if I wanted to.
This all led to me stressing quite a bit which was when I decided to get professional help. I decided to go and see an occupational therapist and a counsellor in the Student Wellness Service at Queens and I ended up seeing the occupational therapist Katie Bala, who then helped me deal with all of my academic stress and worries. I am continuing to see a counsellor Arunima to help me deal and cope with my studies. Both Katie and I decided that the best decision was to stop stressing about the course since that was not helping with anything, and to appeal the course.
My biggest hope is that this appeal will go through and If this appeal does go through then I will be able to start out fresh in the summer time and take the course with a healthy mindset and hopefully do much better in the course the second time around, while continuing to seek out professional help to deal with my stress and anxiety.
Best Regards,
Furohaar Furoghudin
