Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Stephenson,
I am writing this letter to request permission to both drop a course and add a different course to my schedule for Winter 2019.
I am currently a 4th year Applied Economics student, also pursuing a minor in Global Development Studies. I was enrolled in ECON 310 for Fall 2018, however, due to an academic consideration, I wrote my exam on January 15, 2019. At the time, I was enrolled in 6 courses ¿¿ including HIST 200, which is the final requirement for my DEVS minor.
I was unsure of my performance on the ECON 310 final, however, I planned to retake the course should I fail (as it is mandatory for Economics). I checked on my mark in the days leading up to the course add deadline, and it remained marked on Solus as ¿IN¿¿ in which I assumed that it had simply not been marked yet.
In March, it was still marked as IN. I have been in contact with my professor from ECON 310 last semester (Professor Sumon Majumdar) and he has informed me that this was a mistake as I have in fact received a D-, and the marks just have not showed up on Solus for some reason.
As I was unsure of my standing in ECON 310 prior to the course add deadline, I was afraid that I had failed the course. Since there is no online alternative and I am unable to stay in Kingston for the following year, I would need to take the course in-person. As such, I re-enrolled in ECON 310, dropping HIST 200 (as there is a 6-course limit). This was with the intention to drop ECON 310 should I learn that I passed and re-enroll in HIST 200.
However, as mentioned above, Solus continued to show IN until now, so it was not until I contacted Professor Majumdar in March that I learned I had passed, and that he learned of the issue on Solus. Prior to this, I was unsure of whether I could graduate by the Spring. I had initially thought I might drop my minor, however, I then found out that although I have taken enough credits to graduate, some of those were towards my Certificate in Law or COMM courses (which do not all count to an ArtSci degree).
As I know now that I have passed ECON 310, I would like to request permission to drop my current enrollment in the course. Furthermore, as the last class that I would need to graduate in Spring 2019 with a DEVS minor, I am also requesting permission to add HIST 200 back into my schedule.
I have been in contact with Professor Aditi Sen Chowdhury and she was extremely clear on the difficulty in being added this late in light of assignments and readings. However, I have been able to explain to her that I have kept up with the course readings for HIST 200 throughout the semester, as I was unsure if I would re-enroll in the class. Therefore, I was able to somewhat follow along with the material. As such, she has given me permission to be re-enrolled and complete the remaining assignments in the course. My academic plan to compensate for the missed time in the next month is outlined in the next slot.
On a final note, I do want to take full responsibility for my actions which have led me to this position. I understand that if I had followed up on my ECON 310exam results sooner, rather than only checking Solus, I may have been able to meet the course deadlines and would not be submitting this appeal.
This request is to see if there is any possible way to still graduate by this Spring despite these issues, and I completely committed to putting in the full effort to ensure that this occurs.

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: As mentioned previously, I am currently enrolled in 6 courses: ECON 422, ECON 483, ECON 426, ECON 390, ECON 232, and ECON 310.
Should my appeal be approved, I would still be taking 6 courses: ECON 422, ECON 483, ECON 426, ECON 390, ECON 232, and HIST 200. This would allow me to graduate in Spring 2019 with both an Applied Economics major, and a Global Development Studies minor. Currently, all of these courses are going towards the completion of my degree.
I understand that there is a month left of the school year, so I will outline my plan for each course.
For HIST 200, which I would be adding late, I have reached an agreement with Professor Sen Chowdhury that I will be able to complete the remaining assignments for the course (short paper, quiz, and research paper). Given that I have kept up with the course readings, I will just need to supplement these notes with the Module notes, but I do feel I will have adequate time to complete these assignments.
Regarding my other courses, I am fortunate that midterms have completed which will allow more time to focus on catching up missed material in HIST 200. My two test-based courses (ECON 390, and ECON 422) will have only the final exam to prepare for. For ECON 426 and ECON 232, the remaining assessments are a term paper and assignment due Week 11 (March 25-29), and the spacing between assessments has allowed me to already be close to completion for both of those assessments a week early.
ECON 483 is my 4th year seminar ¿¿ as that is composed of a final research paper and a presentation (which I have already presented), I am also nearing completion for this paper due on the last day of classes. Finally, should my request to drop ECON 310 be granted, this would relieve most of my burden in terms of coursework as this is by far the most intensive course with the remaining assignments.
Again, I am very aware of the difficulty and effort it will take to complete HIST 200, but I believe that my schedule does allow for this possibility over the next few weeks.
