Petition Letter: To Whom It May Concern,
My name is Sarah Bentley (20005614) and I am writing a letter of appeal today to request the drop of the course HLTH 333 due to extenuating circumstances. I am appealing to drop this course due to a recent traumatic event experienced this weekend (March 15th, 2019) that has resulted in a huge negative impact on my mental health. As a result of this, I have been very nauseous, unable to get out of bed, unable to eat, and doing everyday tasks such as showering has become a challenge for me. I have not been able to attend any classes and I have been majorly falling behind on all of my school work. I have not been able to get out of my own head or to feel better in any sort of way. This has deeply affected my motivation, appetite, sleeping, socialization with others and has had a huge effect on my mental health.
Due to the effect that this was having on my mental health, I arranged an emergency counselling appointment with Queen's Student Wellness in which my personal counsellor determined that I had a severe level of academic impairment which would result in my needing two to four weeks off of school and we also discussed my course load and thought dropping this course would be a good idea to consider. I submitted the form that she filled out with my academic consideration form.
The reason in which I am only appealing to drop this course instead of other courses is that I have only completed 20 of this course thus far and I still have a huge course load ahead of me to complete. Every day has been a struggle for me but I have been very fortunate to receive academic consideration for the next two to four weeks which has made completing the little bit left of my other courses a lot easier. Since I am already taking 6 courses, the course load is feeling way to heavy for where my mental health is at and the thought of still having to complete the majority of this course is feeling impossible with my mental health in a very fragile state. Every other course, I only have about 20 of assessment to complete which is feeling possible when broken up into small pieces with extensions.
I have been having a very tough time doing everyday things and I have been working hard to advocate for myself to get the help that I know I need. I have booked counselling appointments and have advocated for extensions on many assignments. I really feel as though that dropping this course would take a load of stress that I already have on me off and that if I were to continue with this course then I would not be able to do the work to the best of my ability. I have also met with two academic advisors who have figured out a way for me to graduate on time and take some summer courses starting in July to make up for this drop.
really appreciate your consideration during this very difficult time.
Sincerely,
Sarah Bentley-20005614
