Dear Dr. Stephenson,
I am appealing to drop SOCY284 (Winter, 2019).
I suffer from ongoing anxiety and depression. I have been dealing with this condition for 5 years now. I have been seeking medical support with my family doctor (Dr. Abigail Gradinger), who has prescribed a variety of medications to help manage my conditions. I have also recently begun to work with a therapist in Kingston (Whitney Babcock).
I started the winter semester not feeling particularly in control. As the semester has progressed, both my depression and anxiety have worsened.
My anxiety has made it particularly difficult this semester for me to attend the lectures for SOCY284, where participation is required in every class. A small class setting such as this causes my anxiety to really affect me. Knowing my participation mark is suffering, it has further fuelled my anxiety to the point where I find it impossible to attend the class. In fact, I have not attended class in over 6 weeks. While I have been trying to keep up with course material outside of the class, I feel that not attending the lectures has put me behind, and I do not believe I can complete the course.
My anxiety and depression peaked last week and my parents felt it necessary to bring me home for a while. I am currently in Toronto working from home. I am trying to successfully complete 4 of my courses this semester, but at this point, the thought of trying to complete SOCY284 is just further adding to my anxiety.
I recently met with Katie Bala in academic counselling, who helped me understand my options. I will be registering with QSAS for ongoing academic consideration moving forward. I also spoke with an academic advisor on Friday March 22nd, who also helped me understand my options so late in the semester.
I plan to continue to seek therapeutic and medical support over the summer. My hope is to get my footing, and return in the fall. I plan to meet with an academic advisor to map out the impact of a lighter course load moving forward.
Thank you for considering my appeal. I hope to successfully complete my studies at Queen¿¿s University.
Best Regards,
Chloe Stephens
