Dear Associate Dean (Studies),
Please accept this letter in an appeal for a late drop in STAT 263, and to waive Queen¿¿s University one term appeal deadline due to extenuating medical circumstances.
Over the past while, I have been dealing with a variety of medical issues that have significantly impacted my academic performance in the following ways: extreme anxiety, depression, isolation, insomnia, troubled eating, lack of concentration, lack of motivation, and memory problems. Having to cope with all of this on top of the typical stress and challenges associated with university, I found it nearly impossible to focus on my academics during the Summer term of 2018, let alone succeed at the level I know that I am capable.
I have provided medical documentation from both of my therapists, Dan McGann, and Michelle Cariati, as well as documentation from my doctor, Rhonda Taylor. Although I did seek help for my mental health issues during the Winter term of 2018, it was not enough. The improvements in my mental health were not significant enough to allow me to direct focus on my studies during the summer semester which, was apparent from my inability to succeed in my statistics course.
Well aware that I needed to take some time off to prioritize my mental health, I made plans to put my academic career on pause for the Fall term of 2018 and Winter term of 2019. Over the past year, I have continued to go to therapy in addition to spending time at a treatment center, both of which I believe have helped me immensely. I will be returning to my studies as a full-time student in the Fall of 2019 seeing as I am now in a much healthier state of mind. I strongly believe that I will be able to put more focus on my academics and have a higher success rate due to a healthier and more focused work ethic. For the upcoming Fall 2019 term, I will be retaking either KNPE 251 or STAT 263, for which I hold high expectations in terms of my success for whichever course I end up taking. By taking the initiative to focus on my mental health this past year I feel confident that I will succeed in both my academic career and personal life as I move forward.
Sincerely,
Emma Mackinnon
