Petition Letter: Dear Appeal Committee,
I am appealing to be able to Drop BCHM 316 for the Winter term of 2019. I originally tried to drop this course on SOLUS before the drop deadline, when I first believed that I would be unable to compete this course (please see attached screenshot 'SOLUS'). Unfortunately, I was unaware that BCHM 316 (A 3.0 Unit Course) was a Co-requisite for BCHM 317 (A 6.0 Unit Course), as such when I attempted this SOLUS gave me an error message (see attached screenshot 'SOLUS'). I then got in touch with the program office for Biochemistry (see attached screenshot 'Email 1') they then let me know that this error was because of the co-requisite requirement (see attached screenshot 'Email 2').
The reason why I originally requested this drop and the extenuating circumstances for why I am making this appeal are because of challenges with academic performance because of a psychological challenge. I am a student registered with Student Academic Success Services (see attached file 'Accommodations Letter Samuel Tobert'). This semester has been incredibly challenging for me because of the way my brain has been working. I have been starting new medication in order to help with these challenges, however, getting the dose and timing right has been difficult. Because, of this there were many weeks when I was unable to focus on my work or complete any tasks. This was incredibly frustrating as I have been a student who takes pride in their academic work. This contributed to a downwards spiral which further contributed to my inability to perform. This made it very hard to do assignments, study, compete quizzes and send emails. It is because of this reason that I am asking for this appeal. I have been working hard to learn how to deal with these challenges I face. I have arranged make-ups with all my other professors and have finally gotten a more effective dose recently (which is why I am able to go through this process.) If you would like me to speak more personally to the challenges and how it has affected my academic performance, I would be happy to come in and speak with you in person.
I have spoken to Dr. John Allingham (One of the heads of the Biochemistry program) and Dr. Glenville Jones (The Course instructor for BCHM 316), and the Biochemistry Department Advisor. They have graciously offered that in this situation they would be willing to wave the Co-Requisite requirement for BCHM 317 and BCHM 316, allowing me to drop BCHM 316 without it affecting my standing in BCHM 317. They have additionally suggested for me to submit this appeal as my best course of action after discussing all the possibilities. In this way I would be able to compete BCHM 317 this year and take BCHM 316 next year. It would mean a lot for this to go through for my mental health and standing in the program. I am making positive progress going forward, and have high hopes for my future studies at Queen's.
I sincerely appreciate this consideration for me in this difficult time,
Graciously,
Samuel Tobert
