Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean of Studies;
I am appealing for an aegrotat standing in SOCY 210 (Fall, 2018) and an extension of an incomplete grade in SOCY 306 (Fall, 2018). This is due to extenuating circumstances that have been beyond my control. Since the Fall Term of 2018, I have had semi-regular visits to Student Wellness Services in Lasalle on campus due to mental health issues that were affecting my courses, which led to incomplete grades in my Fall term courses as the Winter term began. Despite planning on completing my outstanding assignments at the start of the Winter Semester, I suffered a severe concussion in January which prevented me from fulfilling my prior plans. Unfortunately this added condition has kept me from completing last term¿¿s courses, as well as keeping me behind in my courses this semester, as I was advised by doctor¿¿s to avoid looking at screens and avoid an abundance of mental stimulation to enhance my recovery. I followed these steps closely, and only began to feel progress in my recovery since mid-March.

In order to deal with the issues that have plagued me, I have discussed with an academic advisor, as well as my doctor, who both agree that as I have completed 60 of the coursework in SOCY 210, I should apply for the aegrotat standing to reduce the amount of work I have to complete as I aim to finish two semesters¿¿ of courses, and to receive an extension of my SOCY 306 incomplete grade to ensure that I am able to work through all of my courses without missing the allocated deadlines. While I will still have three other courses from the Fall semester to complete, I had completed more of the coursework in those courses than I have in SOCY 306, and therefore feel confident that I will be able to have those courses completed by April 30, the last day of the current semester, which is within the timeframe I had been given in prior accommodations. These adjustments will allow me to get back on the proper course in order to salvage the work that I have done in these courses, and keep me on track for completing my degree.

Thank you for your consideration,
Jonathan Karr
