Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean (Studies),

I am appealing for a late drop of BIOL 243 (2019 winter).

Over the past year and particularly this past semester, I have struggled with several factors (the most significant being an illness in my family) that have steadily increased in severity as time has gone on. These circumstances have had very distressing effects on my mental health. My anxiety is often overpowering and I struggle with memory, energy, and focus. I find myself unable to retain information and it takes me significantly longer to complete tasks. Tests or exams that require memory retention are very anxiety-inducing and painful because I know that when I look at the page, I am completely unable to recall what I have studied. Initially, I checked in with a counselor at Queens and I also applied for academic accommodation to give me flexibility on due dates for assignments in the event that I was unable to make them. However, assignments did not end up being my major concern because due to their nature I am able to have resources and course notes open in front of me so that I do not need much memorization. Additionally, having days (as opposed to hours) to complete assignments meant that I was still able to submit high-quality work.

This leads me to why I am only requesting an appeal of BIOL 243 when I am enrolled in a total of 4 courses this semester: BIOL 243 requires a final exam. It is my only exam this year, which is why I did not realize how impossible a task it would be until now. I have been trying to study since before classes ended but I haven¿¿t retained anything. I feel like I am in a fog and completing this course is not realistic for me at this point, especially since it requires a passing grade on the exam in order to pass the course. I initially took this course as a repeat credit to get a more competitive grade in a statistics course for graduate school, but I have realized that in combination with my circumstances, I will not only fail to get a more competitive grade, but that trying (and failing) to perform for this course is having a negative impact on the poor state of my mental health.

I am in the last semester of my undergrad and since I do not need this course for graduation (as I have already successfully passed it in a prior year to fulfill my degree requirements), I would simply like to drop it so that I can begin to heal from the circumstances of this past year without the additional stress of knowing that it has lowered my GPA and also my future likelihood of grad school.

Thank you,
Megan Janecka.
