Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Studies)

I am appealing to drop ECON 240 and ECON 332 after the drop date deadline for the 2019 Winter semester.

It has been a rough semester for me as I have been coping with a tragic situation relating to the death of a close family friend, personal family problems and issues relating to my physical health. All these events have significantly affected my studies and performance this semester as I have missed multiple midterms and lectures. For ECON 332 I missed the original midterm date due to an illness and had to write a make-up midterm test. The week before writing the make-up I was not able to study as I was suffering from the flu. As a result, I did not perform my best on the midterm and the results was not available to me until after the drop deadline. In March, I have been dealing with an illness and missed the midterm for ECON 240. There was no makeup midterm for this class, and the weight of the midterm was shifted to the final exam making it worth 75. Due to my physical health conditions and mental health struggles I have missed the majority of classes in March for these two courses and class attendance is necessary for these courses order to pass successfully. I realize that rather than continuing to pursue these courses it would be in my best interest academically to drop them so I can reduce my course load from 6 courses to 4 courses.

My health card was expired back on February 27, and I was not immediately able to get medical help for my issues in March. I was able to return home after classes ended and have now renewed my health card and am currently seeking medical help for my problems. I have requested the doctor to refer me to a specialist regarding my physical health and have booked an appointment to get some counseling regarding for my mental health. In the future, I will seek help from an academic advisor in planning my courses to ensure that I am able to manage the optimal course load for me to succeed. Additionally, I am hoping that a specialist may be able to help me resolve physical health issues. I am looking forward to meeting with a counselor and have booked an appointment for April 22nd to discuss my mental health and how I can cope with it going forward. I have dealt with a lot of personal struggles this semester and am kindly requesting that my appeal for dropping these two courses be granted as it would help me going forward in preparing for my remaining exams.

Sincerely,

Fahad Khan
