Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
I am appealing to the Faculty of Arts and Science to drop FREN 290 and this request is supported Professor Catherine Dhavernas, French Department.
Extenuating circumstances beyond my control directly affected my academic performance. Prolonged symptoms from having sustained 2 traumatic brain injuries within a year and have caused head pain and anxiety. Due to these health issues I was unable to keep the pace needed to meet my academic deadlines for work submission.
I had taken every recommended precaution throughout the winter term 2018 to heal and was feeling ready to start classes in September. Unfortunately however I fell, August 25th and sustained a serious concussion while in France visiting family.
As you can imagine I did not want this injury to interfere with my studies as my previous winter term had been a challenge.
I did not fully understand the gravity of my situation, hoping with all sincerity that the concussion symptoms would pass quickly . I did believe I was managing but the pace of my reading had slowed and I felt unable to retain information. My inability to meet the academic requirements on time as well as not being able to function as I had before my concussion has caused me anxiety and panic attacks. My anxiety impacted my sleep cycle, which in turn caused further delays in reading, work and meeting submission deadlines.
I sought medical attention in November and was given medication to help with my head pain and stress. Further aggravating my situation I had a reaction to the prescribed medication and ended in the emergency room for several visits.
Since stopping the medication I have thankfully not had any other reaction issues. Furthermore not reading and allowing myself to rest completely, as Dr.Mathew recommended I have healed.
My intention is not to attempt anymore course work until I am sure I can handle the reading and my short term memory is stronger.
