Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean,
Hello. My name is Samantha Mazza, and I am writing to drop one of my fall semester courses.
Earlier this April 2014, I was diagnosed with Epilepsy. I was having numerous seizures a day; severely affecting my memory and cognitive abilities which lead to my early return home for recovery.
When returning in to Kingston in September, I had felt confidence and growing conformity being back at Queen¿¿s in my role as a student. I was excited and ready to continue where I left off ¿¿ but with even greater motivation.
Although the confidence and motivation were excellent traits to bring back to school with me, I heavily underestimated the effects of medication, stress, and daily routine. As weeks went on, I found myself changing. My motivation continuously decreased, and I became nervous and embarrassed as I was not able to keep up with my classes, and I was uninterested in indulging myself in normal pastimes and hobbies. This became a very time for me, leading to many mood swings, paranoia, and sadness. After a month, I noticed a full change in my character ¿¿ I was losing friends, suffering from sleep deprivation and under nutrition, living with high levels of anxiety and finding that even my everyday routine was becoming too difficult. Reaching this point, I chose to seek help through Queen¿¿s Health and Disability Services; leading me to counselling services where I have been undergoing therapy since. From there we established that I am suffering with depression.
Since then, I¿¿m feeling better with where I currently stand in terms of school and mental health. The services I have used through Queen¿¿s have been extremely supportive and reassuring. After reaching out to Health Services, as well as an academic advisor, we concluded my best option in terms of health and academics for the remainder of the year would to be to eliminate some of my work load, leading ultimately to drop ENSC 203.
I am hoping you can understand and agree with this notion, and extend your approval for this appeal. If you believe that this option is unfitting or have any concerns, other suggestions and recommendations are welcomed.
Thank you again for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Samantha Mazza (10059452)
