Petition Letter: PSYC100 APPEAL LETTER

Dear Associate Dean (Studies),

I am appealing to pass PSYC 100 (2018-2019).

Due to unforeseen and extenuating circumstances, I had fallen very ill within this last year due to an ongoing and recurring infection and disease regarding my tonsils. This affected most of my academic performance, but most dramatically affected my grade in the PSYC 100 course, as much of the participation grade was based on attendance and the fact that I had unknowingly at the time, written my midterm exam when I was at a very debilitating time of my illness. I was not fully aware of my condition at the time and had written the exam under the influence of my illness which affected my energy and physical and mental ability to write the exam.

As you can see from my attached documents, I was first diagnosed with mononucleosis and tonsillar abscess/distress October 10th. My doctors told me that my condition would fade within a couple weeks, leading me to believe that I would be well enough to write the December PSYC 100 midterm exam. But through further analysis and doctor visits, my condition is shown to have lasted all the way into March 2019. My condition has lessened in severity throughout time, allowing me to do much better in my labs (overall grade of 82.3) and final exam (50.2). Although my attendance was faltering due to my condition, I was able to complete most of my lab prep work and even achieved a very great mark in that portion of the course. I believe that shows that when my condition allowed, I was able to do well in the course. I completed all of the work and scored poorly on the December midterm exam because it was a very difficult time for me in my illness.

Despite my illness, I was still able to score an overall 47.470 in the course. I would like to appeal the grade of my midterm exam and reweigh it using my other grades when my illness did not affect me and my ability so greatly.
