Petition Letter
Petition Letter: To Dr. Jill Atkinson
I am writing in regards to my past semester (winter 2019) at Queen's. Due to health related circumstances outside of my control I was not able to finish my semester and missed my exams for all courses I was taking at the time. I would like appeal to drop these courses unless it would be possible to write my exams at a later date.
Originally I had taken some time off in the 2017-2018 school due to this illness. I later took and successfully completed a summer course as I was feeling well and was symptom free. I decided to return to studies for the fall 2018 semester but realized I was not ready once the semester began. I then took the semester off to focus on my health as symptoms had returned. During my time off I began to feel better and believed I would be fit to return to studies for the winter semester. When I started the semester all seemed well and I began to adjust to life as a student again. Unfortunately halfway through the semester I became ill again and began to struggle. I dropped a course in order to recover the others. Unfortunately I never fully recovered and worsened shortly after the course drop date. I was not able to write my exams as a result which severely impacted my mark. One of my exams was worth 70 of my grade due to a missed midterm.
Currently I plan on taking at least a year off from my studies, if not more, until I am fully able to complete my courses. I have realized that due to the cycling nature of my illness that although I seemed prepared in the past, things can change quickly in ways I am not adapt to handle at this moment in time. I will not be returning to studies until I have a long period of no illness. I will be meeting with local health care professionals to help manage my illness for the time being. Once I feel I am ready, I will return to Kingston to set up a support network before I resume my studies. This way I can be sure that I am prepared before the semester starts. I will also be taking a reduced course load of 3 or less courses when I do return to avoid stress that may aggravate my condition.
Sincerely,
Megan Hollingsworth 20064496
