Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean
I am appealing the fact that I have been required withdraw from Queen's for one year.
It is undeniable that this school year of mine is a huge failure. I can find many excuse for this but the key factor is that I didn't spend enough time on my study. However there are some extenuating circumstances that just simply beyond my control.
There are two main reasons result to this. First is my ex-girlfriend broke up with me on September 23rd 2018. I remember that pretty clear because that is the day before Mid-autumn festival(a traditional Chinese holiday). By that time I was really hope I got hit by a truck, because I felt that life has lost its meaning, there was nothing left worthy living for. It was a bolt from the blue to me. It happened so sudden that I didn¿¿t see it coming. After that I acted like nothing had happened because my pride don't allow me to show my decadence, but the pain that deep in my heart is indescribable. It was like I was all alone, on a foreign soil, while the only one I thought cares about me left me because I just came to Canada and almost had no friend at that time. It is pretty hard for me to describe my feelings, it's many type of terrible feeling mixed together. Sometimes I can feel the pain in my heart like if it was stab by a knife. I tried to forget it, to move on but I couldn't, all I can do is to find distractions, such as playing video games and watching TV series on Netflix, to let me forget about what happened to me for a monument. This has seriously affected my daily life. During that time, I was lack of motivation or mood to pay enough attention on basically anything including my study. By the time I moved on, it was mid or late November, and changed my daily schedule greatly. I didn't go to psychologist because I think that is embarrassed. I don't really have any official document to prove it. However I talked to a friend a lot about this because she was the only friend I got in Kingston at that time. She is a student of Queen's University as well and her name is Lyu Xinwei her student number is 20099123. She can testify what I claimed.
Another reason is that my parents divorced on March 7th 2019. I received this message on March 24th when my mother called me. Maybe she need time to think how to bring is news to me. I was shocked by this because I didn't see any sign of it, last time I went home during Christmas everything looks fine. She didn't really tell me anything other than the fact it happened. I also deeply concern about this not only about my parents but also for myself. It rise many question such as where is my home or is there a home left This made me very anxiety and there isn't anything I can do about it other than just worry, it made me feel so helpless. I can't talk to anybody about it because my parents didn't want to talk about it and I can't tell my friends about it because it's very embarrassing, I'm also only child have no siblings as well. As the result, I was heavily distracted by this emergency and can't pay enough attention on my studies, especially when the final is approaching. I will include their divorce settlement and divorce certificate which is issue by the Bureau of Civil Affairs as PDF in the document.
Those are my extenuating circumstances. I am acutely aware of the mistake I have made and I really hope you can give me a chance to prove myself. It means everything to me.
Your sincerely

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: The late academic year for me could be describe as a disaster, part of the reason I have given in the appeal letter, another reasons are due to myself.
I didn't have a clear degree plan. I didn't really think much about my major or future career before, so when I enroll the course for the first year, the first major came to my mind is physics, just because I read a book called the A Brief History Of Time in high school and thought physics is interesting. That was a decision lack of deep consideration and turns out to be a huge mistake. Now, after a year of study , I realize that physics isn't suit me. After discussion with my friends, consult my father, consideration of future career and of course consider my situation , I believe I should follow my father's step and study economics. I chose physics just because of an impulse and lack of consideration for further. If I want to have a stabilized future after graduation from university, I should choose a more realistic job other than dream to become a scientist, which makes economics is much more reliable.
I also made some other mistakes . At first I didn't know anything about course choosing at first, so I literally just random pick some courses. After one week at Queens I found out that there is thing called degree plan. Because there wasn't much time left for me to change courses so I just see what courses are on the degree plan and chose some first year courses without really understand what the course content is. I also will try to avoid online course if I can. I took MATH 121 online last year and due to the way online class is, I didn't spend enough time on it, which led to a unsatisfactory grade. I won't enroll optional course that I am not good at or interested in again, such as MUSIC 104. The reason I chose it is I heard that this course is a easy one. I didn't think of the fact that I have no interest nor background in it. Next time before I choose optional course I'll inquire the content of those courses and choose the most suited courses after deep consideration. This time I have checked the content of every courses I plan to take on and choose the most suited courses. I also didn't drop courses in time. I realized that I have a high chance to fail the music 104 before the drop day but I didn't really put that in mind. I just cross my fingers and hope I can pass that, which is pretty foolish. I will keep checking my score before the drop day and drop course that I don't think I can pass.
I have spoke to a academic counselor and after seeking some advise form her I plan to take 4 courses per term. As a full time student, I plan to spend 40 hours per week and I plan to take 4 courses per term. I plan to take ECON 111/112, PHYS P22, CISC P81,GEOL 107 and re-take Math 121 next year. But I don't plan to re-take MUSIC 104 or MATH 111. I have started self-study math in summer which include linear algebra. If the result is good I will take MATH 112 in the next year. As for the reasons I choose those courses, theoretically ECON 111/112 (Introductory Microeconomics/ Macroeconomics)should be same as ECON 110, just in case anything happened and things can't go as plan, ECON 111/112 have more flexibility. The academic avider suggest me to re-take the courses that I failed earlier , I think MATH 121 is not too hard and I also need to take a calculus so I will re-take that. As for the CISC P81 (Applications and Implications), I am a tech enthusiast , know full well about computer hardware, know the basic principle of computers, also having experience in overclock. The most importantly, I have great interest in it. The reason I choose GEOL 107 (History of Life) is that when I was younger, I was quite interest in prehistoric life such as dinosaurs, and I read a number of books and watch some documentary about it. Despite my enthusiasm fade in the past few years, I think I have certain knowledge can help me in the study of GEOL 107.
I also met with Student Academic Success Services(SASS)(online) to make a Learning Strategy plan
First is to have a healthy living habits. Last year was my first year leave home with no supervise from my parents or anybody else at all so my living habits changed significantly, which is not good for study. So I made following plan:
Sleep at more regular hours (at night). Go to before 12 a.m. Support a good bedtime by always waking up by 8:30 a.m.
Work during daylight hours because study at night is lack of efficiency.
supervise from roommates/flat mates: go to class, don't stay up all night, etc. Encourage each other.
I also need to change my academic habits:
Attend all classes, tutorials, labs, even if they don't take attendance. The reason I failed MATH 121 is because it's a online course and I missed a lot of it.
Choose classes based on CONTENT/PROF, not on what time they are offered at. (So, don't avoid early classes just because they're early.)
Keep courses to 4/semester.
Avoid video games during work times. Once I started play video game it is very easy to lose track on time, so not play them at all during work time is a good idea. Make plans to play video games at specific times--limit it to15 hours a week (e.g., Saturday, Sunday morning--motivation to get up on weekends).
Last year I have run into two exceptional situations that I mentioned in the appeal letter. For what happened to me last year, I have total moved on from that. the only possible long term effect left is I'm pretty hard to trust other person in a relationship which I don't think will have much if any effect on my studies. I also learn , not only from my failure on study but also from living two month in misery, not to take that kind of relationship that seriously, because in the end, it can do not but hurt myself. As for my parents' divorce, I have talked a lot with them since I came home on May 6th. Many of my misgiving has been dispel. Although I can't say things are all normal like nothing ever happened and I still feel uncomfortable with that, but I have accepted the fact that it happened and things are not as bad as I thought they would be. I realize that both of my parents are still love me and I lose no one in this. It should not affect my study in the next year.
This is my academic plan. I made this plan after check courses contents and degree plan, consider my academic background and personal preference and take advise from others to make sure the plan suit me best. Those exceptional situations effect in the past are almost solved and should not have any effect on my studies anymore. This plan shall guide me to success and I very hope to have a chance to prove myself.
