Petition Letter: To whom this may concern,
Hello, my name is Nikolas Ignjatic and I have just finished my fourth year at Queens University under the Arts and Science faculty with a major in Geography and Urban Planning (BAH). I am writing this appeal letter today because I have been placed on a one year leave of absence from my academics as I have not been able to fulfil my GPA requirements after being placed on academic probation in May of 2018. However over the past two years I have been battling serious family health issues that have placed myself and my family under a great deal of stress. My grandmother has become seriously ill and her kidneys began to fail in 2016. She had to be placed on dialysis to try and mitigate the damage and keep her kidneys from failing lead to more complications. I have been travelling back to Ottawa almost every weekend in my third year and every weekend in my fourth year to try and assist my family in any way possible. I have spent numerous hours taking my grandmother to her lengthy dialysis treatments at the hospital and this has made it very difficult for me to truly focus on my academics. It has made me constantly worry for my families health and has redirected my attention at times from my school work to ensuring that my family is alright. Near the same time that his happened, my father developed Bechet's. This is a rare auto immune disease that causes inflammation of blood vessels, to make matters worse he had developed this in both of his eyes and needs to get needles directly into his eyes to prevent him from going blind. I have spent a great deal of my time driving my dad to and from the hospital as he would not have been able to do so on his own. He works for my family company that has been passed down through the generations. It is a company called Alaska Wood Industries and his position requires him to read and analyze very fine details on construction drawings. During this time I took it upon myself to try and learn the trade to the best of my abilities while my father still had the ability to show me. This has put immense pressure on myself as I have tried everything in my power to help my family maintain everyones health and learn not only the material given by Queens University, but the ways of my family company at the same time. It has caused me to not be fully focused on my academics, and has made me to fall behind in my courses and I have struggled to dig myself out of that hole numerous times. At one point I considered unenrolling from Queens and fully focusing on my families company so I could spend more time with them and help limit the stress onto them by taking a heavy amount of the burden onto myself. Recently I have confided in Professor Scott Lamoureux as he has been one of my favourite and most trusted professors during my time at here. He has kindly agreed to be a reference during this process and he knows the details of my situation. I thank you for taking the time to read my appeal letter and I hope we can come to an agreement in the near future.

Academic Plan: To whom this may concern,
I have created an academic action plan with the help of Professor Lamoureux and we have decided that if my appeal be granted that I will attempt to not have my four years at this institute, hard work, time and money go to waste. I will switch my degree from the GPHY-BAH to a general GPHY-BA. I need to acquire 3.0 credits in a physical geography class and 15.0 credits in electives. I plan to do this through different forms of online Queens classes and with the supplemental help from Athabasca University where necessary as I am going to try and stay at home and assist my family as much as possible. If my appeal be granted I would do this in the coming Fall 2019 semester and Winter 2020 semester, making me eligible to graduate for convocation in June of 2020. This would mean a great deal to my family and to myself as walking across the stage and collecting my diploma from Queens University has always been a dream of mine. Please consider my offer and I thank you again for listening to my concerns.
