Petition Letter

Petition Letter: I am appealing to drop SOCY 211 (Winter, 2018), ECON 111 (Fall, 2018), and PSYC 241 (Fall, 2018) from my Grade Point Average.

My request to appeal these four courses is due to mental health issues.

I have experienced mental health issues from as far back as middle school but repeatedly brushed it off. During the Winter of 2017, I started to experience more severe symptoms of depression and anxiety. These illnesses led me to believe in irrational thoughts, stripped me of motivation to live an enjoyable life, and hindered me from feeling joy. I was profoundly depressed and frequently loathed the cards that I was dealt, but because of my ignorance of mental illnesses, I thought I was just sad. I found the only solution to escape these thoughts was to sleep an excessive amount. I also experienced physical symptoms; Every moment I felt knots in my stomach as if my organs were being tied continuously. I was ignorant about the meaning of mental health and had too much pride to look for help. It almost felt ¿right¿¿ for me to live in an anxious and depressing world just because of situations that occurred to me throughout my life. All of the symptoms that I was feeling prevented me from accomplishing anything as I believed that I was unable and unworthy of achieving success; I thought that doing well in school was utterly useless as my life felt as if it were going downhill regardless.

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: Throughout these experiences, I managed to do some research on depression and anxiety and found that I was enduring a lot of the symptoms, so I went to Roger Sen, my family doctor at Eagles Landing Medical Center in Vaughan, Ontario in June 2018. During that doctor¿¿s visit, I received a diagnosis of Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Depression. At first, I tried a session of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with Dr. Julie Cinamon on June 23rd, 2018 and found to create a trusting relationship. I also started antidepressants in August 2018 and ever since, I have been given the motivation to start putting the pieces to my life back together. Recently on April 5th, 2019, I visited Dr. Erica Farnworth at LaSalle to have a doctor that I could meet with more conveniently while at school. These interventions have positively changed my outlook on life and now I am more actively determined to successfully earn my degree. In such, I have planned out what courses need to be taken if my appeal is granted. I now know moving forward the significant impact of mental illness and how to utilize support systems offered to me in order to combat it.

Amendment to Appeal 5852

New Information: The reason for not submitting an appeal sooner was because I experienced tunnel vision from the symptoms of Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Depression. I was unable to think clearly about the consequences of missing class because I was too preoccupied with reoccurring thoughts and crutching emotions. However, in August 2018, I was prescribed medication as a long-term intervention to battle these illnesses; This allowed me to think about the consequences of my actions.

Furthermore, I am deciding to appeal now because until presently, I just wanted to move past that point in my life and focus on getting back on track, I was unaware of this process until I met with an academic advisor. I didn't think I would have the ability to change my past actions and now that I have shown improvement in my mental health as well as my school accomplishments I would like to ensure that my marks demonstrate my true ability and not just an unfortunate time in my life.

These classes were more affected than other courses because, in Fall-Winter 2018, my symptoms developed to the point where I was unable to function. I was just getting started on medication, and the effects weren't experienced until around a month and a half later. My reflexes to avoid my anxiety and depression was to sleep and avoid social interactions excessively; This caused me to miss a lot of crucial classes, which in turn disallowed me to perform my best on final exams. PHAR 100 was not as affected because it was offered online; Therefore, I was able to catch up with the course when I began to take my medication regularly in the middle of Fall 2018, and it started to impact and improve my wellbeing at this point.
