Petition Letter

Petition Letter: I am appealing to the Associate Dean (Studies) to waive the requirement to withdraw for a minimum of 1 year. My goals as a Queen¿¿s University student have been an ongoing challenge to achieve. Over the last two years, my mental health has become something that has created barriers, academically and socially, as a student at Queen¿¿s. After receiving the letter of requiring to withdraw, I have taken incremental steps in bettering my health to create a productive learning environment at Queen¿¿s. My mental health, more specifically, my depression, has taken a serious toll on my academic performance at Queen¿¿s. I have isolated my self at Queen¿¿s, which has impacted my social and academic life. My mental health has caused me to lose the motivation I had when arriving at Queen¿¿s in my first year. This letter is an effort to explain the extenuating circumstances that dramatically affected my academic standing at Queen¿¿s.
Throughout the past two years at Queen¿¿s, I had isolated myself from social life, as well as academic life. These were the symptoms that were beginning to damage my daily routine as a student, thus, causing a steady decline in my academic performance. There is a heavy stigma that revolves around men and mental disorders, which brought me to believe that seeking help from a counsellor was unnecessary in solving the problem. I did not think much of the transformation that was going on in my head, until I realized the repercussions it had on my health and well-being as a student. Being vocally active in tutorial became more and more of a struggle, as well as, being able to focus and be productive in lecture. My past has indefinitely sparked my mental condition, although, I have taken incremental steps in order to restore a healthy academic and social life at Queen¿¿s. In essence, my mental condition had drastic implications on my ability to learn in my first two years at Queen¿¿s, which is the timeline of the extenuating circumstances.
Furthermore, attached to this appeal are two sets of documents. One is a document from my family doctor, stating that I had made an official visit on May 22, 2019. The second, is another form from my family doctor that contains blood testing specifications regarding my condition. I firmly believe that these steps will ensure a healthy return to studies at Queen¿¿s, and furthermore, establish a framework for ensuring success academically and socially.

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: My academic plan, if the appeal is effective in waiving the requirement to withdraw, will be to minimize workload and to focus on repairing and improving my overall GPA. In order to repair my GPA, I believe that minimizing my courses to three per semester will be effective in improving my GPA, and attending to the issues mentioned in the Appeal letter. Considering that I am not assigned to any major, my end goal is to pursue a degree in politics. Once my personal issues are attended to, I intend to get back on the path of Politics by focusing on improving my grades in the required courses. If my appeal is granted, I am open to any further modification to my transcript and role as a student, whether it be to change my status as a full-time student, or taking courses that will effectively boost my GPA.
Not only will I be making modifications to my course-load, but I will be pursuing a councillor to plan how I can overcome some of the barriers that comes along with my mental health. Also, I will be seriously considering stepping away from the Queen¿¿s lacrosse team for a year to allot more time towards academics, if the appeal is granted.
