Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Dean:

Greeting.

My name is Xiaoyao Feng, student number is 20119674. I was informed about a 12-months withdraw from university due to the low GPA in the 2018-2019 winter semester. According to my latest situation, I request reconsideration to get this withdraw waived.

At the beginning of last semester, my grandfather suddenly passed away, and my beloved aunt confirmed severe cancer that caused her paralyzed eternally. These two dramatic changes in my family shocked me with great sorrow. As an undergraduate international freshman student who studying and living alone abroad for the first time, I failed to properly adjust my mentality. While greatly missed and worried about my relatives, together with the anxiety about the dropping in grades at the end of the fall semester, my mental stress rose violently.

Beginning from the middle of February to the end of April, I used to lock myself in the dorm all day long and refused to talk, study, not even to use my brain to think. During March, I even once thought of ending this all by suicide. Recalling that period of time, I was trapped in a pure negative atmosphere. At that time, I have already been attacked by that awful mental disease: depression.

Muddled through those days, I barely studied. When the time flew and it came to May, after came back home half an earth away, my relatives found my mental condition unnormal. So, they took me for a complete checkup in a psychiatric hospital. As a result, I have confirmed depression, requiring both having psychotherapy periodically and taking medicines. Fortunately, rather than blaming me, my parents understood and supported me throughout the time, accompanied my whole courses of treatment. Thanks to them, until now, I have been gradually taken out of the shadow.

Recently I received an email from school informing the one-year withdraw. About this penalty, I fully understand its necessity within regulations and the implied information that the university is giving me. The low score was caused directly by the depression, which has also brought me things worse than just a bad GPA. However, as I am recovering in a satisfactory pace, I believe the healthy me does not still share the same personality and habits that the mentally got ill me had in the past, and I should not be punished in the future according to that.

After my mind went on the right track, I made a complete self-reflection. Based on my mental situation nowadays and learning outcome so far, I reworked on my plan of undergraduate study throughout the remaining three years. More detailed study plans are written within the ¿¿Academic Plan¿ document.

I will keep on taking medicines this summer and go to subsequent consultation with the doctor. According to this doctor, I am expected to get totally recovered before the end of next year. Hoping that our school will give me this chance of proving myself eligible for continuing to study without the withdraw. With my ¿¿healthiest¿ mental condition ever in my life¿¿both not sick and passioned to study hard¿¿I will do my best to get my bachelor degree on time and manage to have a successful campus life without being a vulnerable guy like I was last semester.

Sincerely,

Xiaoyao Feng

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: 1. Course of Study
The choice has not changed, I will still study in computing science program in the future. During my second year of study, I will retake course CISC 121, which I have failed in last semester, and then go on to the cognitive science program as my level 2 specialization. At the same time, I will start learning philosophy and psychology, which are the two out of three options required to achieve a cognitive science specialization degree. The few elective courses I will be taking are French, gender study and religion.

After adjusted myself these days, I did not give up my dream of being a programmer. Computing will still be my choice of the degree plan and I will not consider changing my main courses.

If the withdraw is waived, I will be retaking CISC121 as said before, while also taking Math 110 and STAT263 next semester. Electives and optional courses will be French 105 and PHIL115. In the winter semester of 2020, the courses I will be taking are CISC 124 and CISC 203 and CISC 204, as their prerequisites are the CISC 121, that was taken during the fall semester. Also, I wish to start COGS 100 during winter semester if possible, which is also part of my main courses, but recommended to be studied after level 2 of Math. I will manage to catch up with what I have lost in last semester and finish all level 2 courses necessary during the summer semester of 2020.

2. Full-Time Study
According to the current situation, the depression has caused at least a one-semester delay to me comparing to other schoolmates. As an international student, the living cost is relatively more expensive to me compared to the others. I cannot let this depression cause any further bad impact on me and my family, so I have to finish all courses within the remaining 3 years, full time studied. I will try my best to graduate on time in May 2022, otherwise, there will be a severe problem with my family¿¿s financial burden.

During last semester, I suffered a period of learning-weariness. However, I know that is only the external symptom of depression, not my real thought. Now, as I am actively adjusting my mind, I am sure that I can handle a full-time study.

3. Strategies for Success
As I have said previously, the setback in last semester cannot show my real ability in learning. I can achieve so much more as long as I wish to study¿¿at least that was what I believed. But after having a throughout self-assessment and learned more about strategies that can lead to academic success online, I find myself still being able to make great progress in many ways.

Among all those strategies, some can bring direct benefits. For example, the Cornell Noting, Eye Roll Reading, time management, wrong question notebook, team study and so on. Even though some of these strategies are quite classic and I have heard of them before, they usually are the most useful ones, and I just did not pay enough attention when hearing about them before. From now on, I will be valuing them way heavier and will be using them in my study.

I have retaken most courses last semester via OnQ last month, and these strategies I said before have proved useful while studying. By intensive reading through the PowerPoints and fast reading through the textbook, while taking notes by Cornell way at the same time, I understood all the contents quickly and made them my own knowledge. The timetable and ¿¿short time¿¿more period¿ strategy in reading speeded up this process. In my main course¿¿CSIC 121, I can use the data analysis to solve problems and projects that I have missed during the last semester successfully. In other courses like MATH 111/121, all questions become really easy after practicing with past papers.

Aside from these said above, I have also concluded some remarkable strategies on my own. For instance, depression is horrible, but it has also made me realized the importance of friendship. If I did not just try to deal with the depression all on my own and took the power from friends, I might have a catharsis and get everything back in control. If so, nothing afterward would ever happen. This works in group learning as well: by teaming up with friends, even though we may not be taking the same course, we can encourage and support each other. So, I will pay more attention to social works, communicate more with classmates, supervise and urge each other.

As I have gained all these learning strategies, I will and I must revenge on the failure that I have brought to myself, proving it by high GPA and grades in every course I take.
