Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean and the Studies Committee,

My name is Thipika Balakrishnan, a 2nd year student pursuing my BA via distance studies. I am writing to appeal my academic dismissal of one year from Queen¿¿s University. I was not surprised, but still was very distraught to receive a notification informing me of my one year suspension. I¿¿m writing with the hope that you will reinstate me for the next semester. Ever since I was diagnosed with symptoms of multiple sclerosis, it affected my studies deeply. If you look at the time my grades went down and when my medical specialists identified what I was going through, it was around the exact same time period. I had to battle myself in order to finally realize how much my health was affecting everything around me, especially my studies I also had a very unfortunate situation where my relative attempted suicide multiple times from the mental health issues he was going through. I have provided documentation for both situations. My family relative has finally received the support he needed and I am prepared to prove to you that I am mentally prepared to be successful with my academics. My professors from my previous semester are all aware of my situation and have advised me to provide them with an academic plan. From there, they would like me to finish my courses from Fall 2018-Winter 2019. I am finally getting the help I need to do better academically, mentally and physically through my social worker, health professionals and Queen¿¿s University professors. I am so sorry for all the extra trouble I have put your faculty through. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to explain my circumstances.

Kind Regards,

Thipika Balakrishnan

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: Dear Associate Dean and the Studies Committee,

My name is Thipika Balakrishnan and I am appealing my suspension status from the BA online program. I have expressed my medical and personal issues in my appeal letter regarding multiple sclerosis and extenuating circumstances with a family member. My academic plan includes meeting my academic counsellor at Queen¿¿s University on a regular basis to see how I can be successful academically. For my previous courses from last semester, I am working with all my professors on academic plans to complete it by the end of August 2019. I have reached out to all of them in May and they have agreed to work with me on completing the courses. I am so grateful for their help in this process and making sure that my wellbeing is intact. I will be having regular meetings with my social worker/medical professional (i.e. neurologist) to make sure I have everything I need to be physically/mentally prepared to achieve academic success. If I am ever affected by extenuating circumstances, I will go to my Queen¿¿s academic counsellor right away and figure out the next steps. I apologize that it took me a while to get myself back together and how much it deeply affected my studies. I hope you will give me the chance to show how well I can do at Queen¿¿s. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to explain my circumstances.

Kind Regards,

Thipika Balakrishnan
