Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Studies),
My name is Abby Nolan, I am a first-year student and my student number is 20108219. I am writing this letter to request to drop PSYC 100, both the fall and winter terms, because of the extenuating circumstances I endured in early March. On March 5th, I got a call my mom with the unexpected news of my dad¿¿s passing. I went home that day with the expectations that I would be home for a couple weeks, enough time to grieve and spend with family, however that timeline was not reasonable in my case. On the way home my aunt, my dad¿¿s sister, directed me to the funeral home where she had already begun signing papers for his cremation. After arriving at the funeral home and stating my relationship to my dad, the funeral director was forced to terminate all papers my aunt had begun, and restart the process under my name because I am his child, the next of kin and the executor because he did not have a will. By this point, I realized that my estimated time home of a couple weeks was not reasonable because of the responsibilities I had now gained from being the executor. Out of panic I emailed all of my professors, including the PSYC 100 team, to inform them of what had just happened. I emailed the PSYC 100 team about my labs because I knew I was only able to miss seven. Shana M. Needham from the PSYC 100 team responded to my email and told me they could grant me documented absences for the rest of my labs if I had not already missed seven, to which I then thought the few labs that were left, would be excused with documentation because I had only missed two previous to March 5. On March 29, I got an email from Cheryl Hamilton saying that I had missed six labs and if I missed the seventh lab, I was unable to pass the course. To which I responded saying I did not know that documented absences counted towards the seven labs, and if I had, I would have made sure to be at the labs even under my extenuating circumstances. After sending this email, I was told that appealing to drop PSYC 100 was in my best interest due to the miscommunication on both parties. Therefore, as a result of the responsibilities I gained from being the executor, which also prevented me from not coming back to campus, and the miscommunication between PSYC 100 and I, I missed seven labs and am now unable to pass PSYC 100.
