Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Studies),
I am appealing to waive the 21 - day deadline and to drop LAW 201 (Winter, 2018) past the drop deadline.
This appeal being a result of extenuating circumstances beyond my control, which affected my academic performance along with my personal stability. I began the process of recovery from substance abuse early 2017. Since then it has been a battle with relapse and moments of sobriety. After attending my first treatment facility (Renascent Munro Treatment Centre) August of 2017 and achieving a few months of sobriety, I decided to enroll in LAW 201. However, upon reflection this was an insufficient amount of time, being that I was unable to fully process certain traumatic experiences along with other influential factors. Which, eventually led me to depend on substances furthermore and I relapsed for the final time mid-February 2018. As a result, I then began my second inpatient treatment program March 8th at Edgewood located in Nanaimo, BC.
Following, several months as a patient of their facility, I decided to continue to live in Nanaimo. This time allowed me to further address various underlying mental health issues and remain close to support systems which were solely grounded in recovery. I returned to Toronto the fall of 2018 and have slowly began reintroducing affairs and responsibilities into my daily life. I now have over a year and 4 months of sobriety and am commencing the process of enrolling in courses for the fall of 2019. However, will be hindered to do so as a result of this failing grade.
I was unable to appeal to drop this course prior to the deadline as I was in treatment, without access to the internet along with other requirements to write a proper appeal. Being that my addiction has been an ongoing life altering and occasionally acute circumstance; I have consciously waited until recently under the advice of counselors and support systems to reintegrate triggering factors such as academics back into my life. This will allow me to achieve 18 months of sobriety as classes are scheduled to begin.
For the upcoming school year, I have plans to enroll with student disabilities services prior to the start of classes, to ensure I have academic supports in place when necessary. Along, with attending 12-step based meetings regularly and staying connected to the recovery community. I also plan on taking a smaller course load to begin with and then adjusting this accordingly. All the while, keeping in mind that my mental health should be a top priority and that my academic success relies on remaining clean and sober.
