Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To Whom it may concern,

I am applying for an academic appeal as I believe the circumstances below were out of my control in order to drop WRIT 120 before the add drop deadline. If I was enrolled into WRIT 120 well before the add drop deadline, and I failed to drop the course on time, I would understand why it would be necessary for a 50 payment of the course. However, this is not the case. I have always respected the enrolment and tuition payment deadlines. To pay an extra 309.15 for a course I am not taking will cause financial hardship for me. Please see the timeline below to understand my circumstance:

July 1: Tuition deadline

July 2: Checked my grades on Solus and found I failed CHEM 281 during the May/June semester and therefore I am behind one credit in order to graduate on time. I joined the waitlist for MUSC 171 and WRIT 120 as they were both full

July 4: Saw an academic advisor

July 6: Received notice that I was successfully enrolled in MUSC 171 (8:01pm) (I have since paid the tuition for this course in full)

July 7: Course add/drop deadline, considering this was the last day to add/drop a course and I had yet to receive notice regarding WRIT 120, I did not think I needed to drop the course as I was never successfully enrolled

July 8: Email sent that I was successfully enrolled in WRIT 120 (11:01pm, was long asleep)

July 9-10: Worked in the morning of July 9, and then went out of the area and had no access to internet until the evening of July 10 when I returned to Kingston and then read the email regarding WRIT 120 and dropped the course right away

Evening of July 10: Contacted Records and Services Office of the University Registrar by email

July 11: Received an email stating that I would need to apply for an academic appeal, and if this is approved, and then for a tuition amendment as well

In regards to my financial standing, I have paid for two summer courses already (MUSC 171 and CHEM 281) in addition to the fees I will now have to pay for this appeal. I am aware that I have dropped WRIT 120, however, I would not have been able to take two courses during the July/August summer semester as I need to work two jobs in order to afford tuition and living costs. I appreciate your consideration in this matter. If you could get back to me as soon as possible regarding this appeal as the 309.15 fee has not been paid yet, and I do not want to accumulate further late fees on top of the application fee for this appeal.

Kind regards,
Danielle Aman
