Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,

I am appealing for a credit standing in CISC 102 of the winter semester 2019.

The circumstances surrounding my appeal are that I developed severe anxiety accompanied by panic attacks towards my courses, specifically the tests and exams, approximately halfway through my first semester at Queens university. This anxiety made focusing on schoolwork difficult and caused even more serious issues during the test and exam periods of my study. As a result, I often could not sleep or eat because the anxiety was so severe. When the time came to write exam¿¿s, I could not focus on the exam for the first half of writing it, and then only marginally improved in my ability to write it after that. This was not helped by the fact that I was writing the tests and exams on limited sleep, as well as very little food because I felt so nauseated.

The reason that I am only applying to appeal for CISC 102 specifically is because the entirety of the course is based on tests and exams, unlike many of the other courses I was taking. This did not allow me to balance my serious anxiety about writing tests and exams with the course work that I was able to do outside of the tests and exams.

I did not drop the course before the deadline because I had begun to work with my healthcare professional about dealing with the anxiety that I was having. I scheduled an appointment with him about halfway through the duration of CISC 102, and had hoped my condition would improve quickly and I would be fine to write the CISC 102 exam anxiety free. This was not the case and dealing with the anxiety and panic attacks that I was experiencing turned out to be much more difficult that I had originally thought it was going to be.

I am currently working with my healthcare professional and have met with him a couple of times this summer to discuss treatment as well as ways to manage my anxiety, and will have ongoing appointments with him as second year approaches. I hope to be able to function better in second year as a result.

In order to help deal with my circumstances I intend to meet with my healthcare professional at least once a semester to keep him up to date with my situation, as well as further discussions on how to continue to manage and treat the anxiety that I have. I also intend to get in contact with Student Wellness Services when I return to university this fall in order to discuss the problems that I have and am facing. In addition, I will have a physical program in place to help alleviate stressful situations. This, in combination with mediation and working with my doctor, will hopefully allow me to have a very successful academic career going forwards.
