Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Jenn Stephenson,
I am appealing to request an extension of the deadline for dropping a course and requesting a Credit (CR) standing for two courses. I would like to drop POLS250 (2017/2018) and receive a Credit (CR) standing for PHIL250 (2017/2018) and ECON110 (2017/2018).
In the summer of 2017, my mother was diagnosed with an illness that the doctors believed to be treatable. Since it was believed that she would beat the diagnosis, I decided to attend school in the Fall of 2017. As the end of the year approached, her illness got progressively worse and she suffered several complications. The doctors still believed she would make it through it, so I again decided to attend school in the Winter of 2018. Unfortunately, in February 2018, she passed away. I was unable to do class work for months following her passing because the depression and anxiety I had begun to experience in the summer got significantly worse. For this reason, I was not able to perform to my usual standard in PHIL250 and ECON110 and was unable to finish POLS250.
I am asking for an extension because I have been unable to do anything from school work to getting out of bed since my mother¿¿s passing due to the depression I have been experiencing. Writing this appeal has been on my mind for quite some time, and I am only finding the energy now to write to you.
As mentioned before, I am beginning to feel better and am finding coping mechanisms to deal with the grief I have been carrying. I am seeing a psychotherapist regularly and they have been helping me sort through my feelings of grief so that I am able to live my day to day life with more ease. In addition, I have a great support system that make sure I am getting exercise, eating regularly and getting the right amount of sleep. I have also seen an occupational therapist to help me organize my time better and focus on work so that I am able to continue my studies.
Although I am managing my mental health better, I still continue to struggle. I plan to make personal adjustments to succeed in my future studies by taking a lighter course load in the Fall of 2019. Also, I will continue to see my psychotherapist weekly and my doctor biweekly in order to manage my symptoms of depression and grief. By doing this, I will have more energy to focus on my academics and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
I appreciate you taking the time to read my letter.
Sincerely,
Jessie Forbes
