Petition Letter

Petition Letter: During fall of 2018, extenuating circumstances, beyond my control affected my academic performance. There were many psychological challenges, and family problems that made it impossible for me to succeed in my academics. The effects of these events caused detrimental damage, I was unable to attend class, causing my grades to fall lower and it seemed nearly impossible to pay attention when I did in fact attend. These events occurred a few days after I arrived in Kingston, just days after classes began. I was severely affected by these instances for the school entire year, to the point where I dropped all the courses, I had been enrolled in for the winter 2019 term. During high school, I was diagnosed with severe social anxiety, and received accommodations from my high school for additional assistance. I started taking medication for my anxiety during the summer of 2015. I was taking this medication steadily for almost a year and a half. Things were going well, and I was able to manage my anxiety without the assistance of any medication. So, when I started university, I had not been on any medication nor was I receiving any accommodations. I was able to manage my anxiety and was working to the best of my abilities.
As I mentioned earlier, just days after I moved to Kingston ready to start my second-year I suffered an extremely traumatic experience. This experience happened at a social function and was one of a violent and sexual nature. This plunged me into a state of depression and heightened my anxiety to unmanageable levels. Had it not been for this event, I would have been able to succeed both academically and socially. Instead, I became practically a recluse, dropped my winter term courses, and avoided all social contact.
Suffice to say, this led to my grades plummeting along with my mental health. Over the last year, I have resumed my medication, received support for my mental health, and am actively seeking academic accommodations to repair last year¿¿s damage to my mental health and academics.

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: Going forward, I have decided to not let the events that took place define me or what I can accomplish. This year I vow, to seek assistance when I need it, whether it be from friends, family and/or health-care professionals, instead of suffering in silence. I am making personal adjustments to succeed in my future studies, I have made appointments with student wellness, to discuss my mental health and to obtain the required documentation I need to receive academic accommodations. In addition, I will be reaching out to medical professionals to receive a personal counselor so I can better maintain my mental health. Also, I will be taking a lighter course load to ensure I don¿¿t get overwhelmed this school year. I have also met with academic advisors and the head of the philosophy department to discuss my plan to assist me in my academic success.
Although this is my plan for the future, I still need to deal with the past. If the appeal board does not approve dropping these grades from my transcript, I will be left with a drastically lower GPA due to circumstances that were out of my control. I hope the board will accept my appeal to drop these F grades from my transcript, as it is evident that these events were out of my control and resulted in extenuating circumstances.
