Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean - I, Zeyana Laplante ¿¿ 20060475 am appealing for the following:

Credit Standing in:
HLTH 235

The reason for my appeal is due to extenuating circumstances regarding my health; both mental and physical that are beyond my control, family matters and finally, being a victim to a sexual misconduct matter regarding a teacher at Queen¿¿s.
I am currently in my third year of studies at Queen¿¿s, however, I am writing this in regards to the 18-19 school year. I have been suffering from medial issues since the first year. New medical problems have surfaced since then, causing me to have had to spend many hours of my weeks spent in hospitals, traveling to see doctors, or having phone calls with various doctors to try to find answers, this resulted in me missing many classes and also making me less engaged towards my academics because my energy and motivation was at an all-time low.
In addition to my health problems, my father, who is the primary financial and emotional support in my family of 5 suffered a stroke during the school year which severely impacted his ability to work, which resulted in my family having financial struggles and having to sells our house, cars, etc. This took a toll on me emotionally because of the hurt I was feeling, and the anxiety I had towards not being able to financially support my studies at Queen¿¿s. To add to this, I, unfortunately, had a to deal with a TA¿¿s sexual misconduct towards me during the academic year. Having to deal with the scare, embarrassment and stress of the sexual misbehavior severally took a toll on me physically, emotionally, and academically.
Throughout all of this, I have taken the necessary steps to heal myself and to become strong emotionally and take my academics a step higher. I have registered with Accessibility services, have had tremendous support from Barb Lotan, and I have spoken with Melody Monte about necessary steps to switch degree plans to my true passion which Is health.
The reason that I am appealing these courses at a date which seems to be far from the incidents is that I did not know I was able to appeal for this until today, and as soon as this came to my attention I started writing this letter. I appealed for a late drop in FREN150 at the end of the last term, and the reason I did not appeal for these other classes at the same time is because like I said, I did not know it was possible to appeal for more than one course and thought it would seem ¿¿greedy¿ if I did. After meeting with Melody Monte as well as Spring from the ART/SCI undergraduate office today, September 23 2019, who both advised me to submit this appeal, I realized that what I went through is very valid and I should speak up about it. If this appeal gets granted, it will essentially change my life for the better, because it will allow for my GPA to be close enough to where it needs to be to transfer into my dream program of Health Studies.
Transitioning to becoming an independent student is already hard enough. However, having to deal with all of these emotional rollercoasters that I did not ask for nor wish upon others, on top of the stress of being a student is a lot to bear for a 20-year-old girl or anyone for that matter. And as a result, my grades were very poor. I hope that whoever is reading this can understand the commitment I have towards successfully completing my studies at Queen¿¿s, and see that what the struggles I was faced with were fully out of my control. I hope that you are able to understand my request in my appeal for GNDS 212, FREN 118,IDIS 280 as well as a credit standing in HLTH 235.
