Dear Dr. Stephenson,
I am appealing for aegrotat standing in the following courses: MATH 120 (F2018/W2019), BIOL 103 (W2019), CHEM 112 (F2018/W2019), MATH 110 (F2018/W2019), and WRIT 125 (W2019).
During week 11 of the second semester, I started experiencing severe mental health symptoms and had to leave campus to go to the hospital. I was diagnosed with psychosis and am currently in the Early Psychosis Intervention (EPI) program through Lakeridge Health. As a result of the severity of my illness, I have been unable to return to my studies.
When I first started experiencing symptoms in March, I visited the hospital and through a follow up appointment, a psychiatrist provided a letter to Queens Student Accessibility Services for accommodation. I switched dorms and tried to come back to school and finish my final two weeks and exams but could not do so. Shortly after moving home, I was admitted to the hospital with severe mental illness and was put under the care of a healthcare professional, where currently, am an outpatient in the EPI program.
Initially, when this happened in March, I applied for and was granted a Letter of Accommodation so I deferred my exams until the end of September and thought I would be able to write them at that time. I have tried to study and prepare for the exams over the last couple of months, but my health has prevented me from studying and the stress has only made my symptoms worse. My recovery has been difficult, and this unexpected mental illness has completely devastated my life. I am currently not able to go to school or work or see friends and barely leave the house due to my illness. My healthcare professionals recommend I focus on my recovery and not worry about my academics right now. As the timeline for my return to school is uncertain, I am unable to defer the exams to later date and require aegrotat standing to close the matter.
Over the next year, I plan on focusing on my recovery in order to return to school as soon as possible. I will continue to have regular visits with my psychiatrist and counsellors to maintain my health. The timeline for my return is uncertain, as it is too soon in my recovery to set a specific date. I appreciate your consideration in this matter.
