Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
I am appealing to drop ASTR 102 (Summer, 2019) after the drop deadline.
I have a chronic mental health condition that involves regularly changing dosages of multiple medications in order for me to be fully functioning. At the beginning of June of 2019, my mental health noticeably worsened, and my family doctor put me back on some medication I had previously used for the issue. Still, I got progressively worse, to the point where around mid July I had to quit my summer job and move back home. My family doctor then diagnosed me with a different mental health condition and I was put on different medication to treat the new problem.
Throughout June and most of July I was using medication to treat the mental health condition my family doctor initially thought I had, however with the new diagnosis and new medication in effect, it was clear that was helping me a lot more. For most of ASTR 102, I was on my old medication. It wasn¿¿t working, and many days I struggled to even get out of bed. I simply didn¿¿t have the mental energy it took to concentrate on my course, so I stopped even logging on to my OnQ.
In order to prevent this situation from happening again, I have implemented multiple changes in my life. I am taking the Fall 2019 semester off of school in order to focus on getting my mental health back to a place where I feel confident in handling the additional stress of school. I have regular doctors appointments to assess whether the doses of medication I am on are working, or if they need to be changed. I have a meeting October 21st with a psychiatrist. I have also connected with a local counsellor, and have been meeting with her and partaking in CBT therapy. As I am taking the time to build a strong support system here at Queen¿¿s, I am doing my best to make sure that my ongoing mental health condition will not severely interfere with my ability to perform academically.
Thank you for your consideration in this matter.
Sincerely,
Maya Steckly
