Petition Letter: Dear faculty,
I met with Tess Grant (Occupational Therapist at LaSalle) and professor Paul at the end of the winter term of 2019 (March, April) regarding receiving an incomplete (IN) for PHIL 451. I provided documentation for my extenuating circumstances to the professor, he granted me an IN for the course. We did not discuss a clear deadline, but he told me to submit all remaining coursework before the end of the semester.
At the time, I was also connecting with the graduation coordinator and the faculty to look over the requirements for me to graduate on time (June 2019). The academic advisor Ms. Spring and I determined that PHIL 451 and PHIL 318, the two courses that I have IN for, will not be counted towards my graduation requirements and I will have more time to finish them.
I have been working diligently over the summer to complete the two courses, and I submitted all remaining coursework for PHIL 318 before September 15th, because that was the deadline I was given. I have completed half of the final essay for PHIL 451, but need more time to finish up the final piece, and I thought I did have more time because the professor told me to email him my work when I am done...
A few days ago, I received an email from the professor (Dr. Lisa Guenther) for PHIL 318 telling me that they had difficulty processing my final grade, since it is past the September 15th deadline for her to submit marks. I realized that September 15th is the final deadline set by the university to submit all coursework, and it is the last day of the summer semester.
I am currently registered in the philosophy MA program at uOttawa. The department requires that I submit my final transcript by December 2019 and that I have successfully graduated from Queen's. The credits for PHIL 451 is crucial to my studies later on, I risk withdrawal from my MA program if I fail PHIL 451. I am currently doing well, and I really enjoy the combination of my two favour subjects together - philosophy in French. I do not want to withdraw... so I really hope I can have an extension on the IN status for PHIL 451.
Note: The documentation I have included is an email chain from May 2019 when I was coordinating with professor Paul and administration regarding when I need to submit my coursework and the requirements to graduate. Professor Paul approved that I can submit the coursework later, but we did not set a date.
Thank you very much for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Laura
