Petition Letter: Dear sir/madam,
I am appealing to drop my fall classes past the academic drop deadline.
I am a student with metastatic cancer and my condition is unpredictable. I had a flare up of my illness in September, including a common virus, which cumulatively impacted my ability to pursue my studies. I continued to organize and prepare for my classes and tests despite being behind in my coursework. I was/am experiencing continued fatigue, lethargy, confusion, but wanted to keep my classes during medical follow up.
This pattern has unfortunately been an ongoing issue since September 2018; I start classes and then am faced with uncertainty and side effects of disease and treatment. This does not mean I do not want to keep attempting to pursue my studies, in fact it is devastating and frustrating when I am faced with such a severe lack of concentration and fatigue.
When realizing classes would be impossible this semester I chose to keep my classes on record and accessible so I could prepare for taking them again in January 2019 should my illness allow (some of the modules only open weekly). I was always aware of the November 1st drop deadline and chose in advance to drop the courses on this day to allow for maximum preparation in advance for the January 2020 semester.
On the evening of October 31st, 2019 Montreal had what is considered a ¿¿major storm¿ (as you may already know) and being near the water/in a vulnerable suburban zone, our house was flooded and without power for over 28 hours. I called the library down the street, a hotel, coffee shops, and my family members, but everyone was without power for the entire day and night on November 1st, 2019. The power came back at 2am on November 2nd, 2019. While I know that I could have done better with regards to seeking assistance to drop my classes on time, I have limited energy and concentration due to my illness and did not feel physically capable of driving to a much further location (or thought of calling a friend that might live out of province to help me log in and drop) in order to drop my classes in time.
I am now using the first opportunity to appeal the drop deadline and request your compassion and understanding in the above matters.
Please consider my request in light of the information I provided.
