Petition Letter: I am appealing to drop HIST 244 (Fall, 2019). I was unable to drop this course before the last day to drop Fall Term classes without academic penalty. This is due to extenuating circumstances that are beyond my control. I have been dealing with these for the past two and a half weeks. I have included my Verification of Confidential Extenuating Circumstance form that I was provided by a Queen¿¿s counsellor who I have been meeting with to handle this situation. The situation took place on and off a Kingston transit bus and the situation has been negatively impacting me since the evening that it occurred. I have been in constant contact with the Kingston Police, Queen¿¿s Campus Security, and Victim Services. The proceedings for this incident have been ongoing, which has impacted my ability to sleep and focus on most of my daily routine. As such, I missed the deadline for dropping Fall Term classes. These extenuating circumstances are beyond my control and have impacted my ability academically. The course I am appealing is very stressful for me because I have missed all my classes the past two and a half weeks and I am behind in all my readings and work. The course has many readings due per class and I have tried my best to complete work for this course, however, I have not been able to concentrate and am incredibly anxious knowing I have missed a significant number of classes, readings, class discussions, and assignments. The course has 50 of the overall course mark due around this time and I have not completed any of the assignments, which heightens my anxiety. I have had anxiety for years and receive accommodations for this with Queen¿¿s, so this event that has transpired has worsened my anxiety even more. I am working with a counselor at Queen¿¿s to manage my stress and anxiety and will continue to do this.
