Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Studies),
I am appealing to drop CISC 101 (Fall 2014).
In September 2014 I enrolled as a full-time student at Queen¿¿s in the faculty of Arts and Science. I attended approximately one month of classes. On October 14th I sustained a severe concussion hitting my head on the gym floor playing intramural basketball. I was taken to Kingston General Hospital by Queen¿¿s Security personnel and examined by medical staff who advised me that I had suffered a concussion. I was told to take several days off classes for complete rest.
On Monday October 20th I attempted to return to class but I felt really ill. Immediately after I went to my family doctor, who advised me that I needed to take 2 weeks complete rest because I was still exhibiting symptoms of a severe concussion. During this time I also went to see Lee Fisher-Goodchild at Queen¿¿s Disability Services. Lee helped organize accommodations for attendance, assignments and exams.
Over the next few days my symptoms did not improve so I was referred by my family doctor to Doctor O¿¿Connor, a concussion specialist at Kingston Orthopaedic & Pain Institute (KOPI). At the initial visit, Dr. O¿¿Connor suggested I drop one course (Chem 112) to lessen my course-load and try to keep up with my other courses at my own pace. A couple weeks later I saw him a second time and my symptoms were not diminishing at all and I was having a difficult time keeping up with my studies. At this time he suggested I concentrate on less courses to further lessen my workload. Based on his recommendation I stopped actively working on Math 110 and shifted from Math 120 to Math 121.
At 6 weeks post-concussion Dr. Connor prescribed physiotherapy to try and alleviate my concussion symptoms as well as massage therapy and chiropractic treatment for whiplash. At this point he advised complete mental rest for the remainder of the semester. Over the past 2 weeks I have been to numerous massage, chiropractic and physiotherapy sessions. At 8 weeks I have come to the realisation that I am completely unable to carry on with any academic work. As of December 13th, I made the decision to drop all of my courses and concentrate on getting better. Over the course of my injury I have attempted several times to return to class and complete assignments but on every occasion I was immediately afflicted with symptoms related to my concussion ¿¿ severe headaches, sensitivity to noise and light, inability to concentrate, feelings of nausea and general exhaustion. In light of the fact that my condition has not improved over the last 2 months I feel I need to concentrate on my health and well being. I have now withdrawn from all my classes and my plan is to prioritize getting better. My intention is to return to university in the fall of 2015 at which time I hope I will be fully able to focus on my academic studies.
Thank you for your consideration.
