Petition Letter: To Whom it May Concern,
My name is Brett Kenny. I am a recent graduate of Queen's University, as I completed my last year of Kinesiology last spring (2019). Since graduating, I have planned to move forward with my studies to a post-graduate program, however, I felt that I needed a year to destress from my studies and focus on applications to various schools and saving money before my next academic adventure. Over the summer I had decided that it was in my best interest to at least maintain some level of academic rhythm by returning to Queen's as a part-time student, only take a few courses to ensure that I was still mentally, physically, and spiritually engaged in a regular school routine.
Since making the decision to upkeep my study habits at Queen's, I enrolled and participated in my classes with great success until I fell behind in KNPE 339 - Advanced Exercise Metabolism. It started when I was required to travel home at the very end of October/early November 2019 for a family-related emergence. After about a week at home, my family member's health stabilized and I returned back to school, albeit slightly behind my usual schedule but nothing worth submitting for an appeal to drop the course at the time. This absence required me to miss four separate classes of KNPE 339 within two calendar weeks. At this point I had already successfully completed my first of three unit tests and a group assignment. Knowing I was behind, I wanted to see if I could make up for lost time on my second of three unit test and completed it, however, my time away from class proved to be too significant and the mark I received put me further behind with regards to my grades in that class.
As I am a 5th year part-time graduate student, I understand that these marks will bot be counted towards my degree plan, however, as I am in the middle of application process for various schools I am stressed that this mark could tarnish my chances of being accepted in a post-graduate program. Especially if I am required to re-apply to these programs next year and this course is on my transcript. I realize that this may be considered a late application, however, I didn't want to rush the appeal process as I originally felt confident that I could make up for this lost time. As of now, I feel nothing but stress and lingering pressure associated with not knowing how this will effect my applications for next year. Please consider this appeal as my request to drop KNPE 339 without academic penalty.
Thank you very much for your time and consideration during this process, it is greatly appreciated. I look forward to hearing back regarding this situation. Have a great day and thank you again.
