Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Studies),
I am writing to appeal to drop SPAN 111-003 (Fall 2019).
This appeal comes with a great amount of thought and consideration therefore primarily thank you greatly for allowing me the opportunity to explain my circumstances. I admit I have had a very tough time this semester not only adjusting as a first-year undergraduate student but also dealing with some rather personal circumstances which have unfortunately altered my mental and physical health in recent months. Earlier this semester, I had undergone an unexpected wisdom teeth removal surgery along with being prescribed medication for pneumonia which forced me to remain at home for a period of time therefore I was staying on top of my studies through ONQ which was a great help during the time I was away. Upon my return, this course had become very difficult to keep up with thus I had already missed classes that affected my participation mark and the course material cannot be found online.
Later in the semester, I had learned of a very unfortunate event that took place in my life unknowingly. I was sexually assaulted late this year which I just learnt about. Learning this has become my biggest enemy both mentally and physically, I had not realized how much of an impact it has brought upon my life until recently which is perhaps why I failed to drop the following course by the deadline. I have spent countless hours and sleepless nights dealing with the events that occurred around that night. I have a hard time physically going to class. This has taken a great toll on my life that I did not know it could. It is a feeling so difficult to describe thus the thought of the situation haunts me every single day and is ultimately the reason why I am unable of proceeding with this course. I truly believed I could handle all these burdens; I tried my best, but I simply cannot continue. My mental health has become the grave reason of my performance in the course.
I will focus more on my health and have been looking into receiving professional help that will aid me not only in my future studies, but in my life. I would like to thank you once again for considering my appeal and hope you can understand my grounds.
Thank you so much.
Sincerely,
Aleksandra (Ola) Zakrzewska
