Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Jenn Stephenson,
I am appealing for re-registration into the GNDS 125 (Fall, 2019). Additionally, the professor has suggested the option of an incomplete grade to allow me extra time to finish my assignments.
When initially embarking on the course, I experienced a worsening of my chronic illnesses, which truly necessitated accommodations. However, I was unable to have a meeting with the Queens accommodations office and an accommodations letter generated until October 10. I immediately forwarded this to my professor and the accommodations were put in place as of October 16. Within this waiting time, I communicated to my professor how the severity of my health at the time was affecting my ability to keep up academically. Despite finally having the accommodations in place, it had been incredibly difficult and stressful to navigate the course without supports in place for nearly six weeks and as a result, I had fallen behind.
I ultimately dropped the course on October 29, followed by an email to my professor conveying that although I wanted to continue the course, I had withdrawn out of concern of academic penalty. She responded with the offer of continuing to adapt the course to make it possible for me to continue (such as extended deadlines), and suggested I hand in the course¿¿s first paper. I submitted the paper within the extended deadline and after receiving an 85, she directed me to email the Arts and Science Online Department concerning re-registration. To allow more time for me to complete the remaining work, she proposed an incomplete grade and an alternative to the one group assignment.
As I am in a more stable place, both in terms of health and accommodations, I feel certain this is a suitable course of action. I truly want to see this course through to completion and feel confident that structure would allow me the opportunity to do so. My professor has communicated that through the incomplete grade we can determine a pace together for the remaining two assignments, allowing me to finish it before the winter semester. Should I be granted this appeal, I would pursue accomplishing the remaining reading and assignments within the set timeframe, with the security of improved health.
