Petition Letter

Petition Letter: The reason for which I am submitting an academic appeal is due to a late policy for the submission of MUSC 171's final take home essay. The final examination is an essay which was to be handed by December 13th, 2019, by 6pm. The late policy for the essay is as follows: any submission not made by the 6pm deadline will receive a grade of 0. I missed the deadline for submission by approximately 16 hours, (emailed the professor my essay the morning of the 14th) not due to an inability to complete the required work but rather a simple personal mistake. I can prove via screenshots of the timestamp of the last edit made to the essay that the essay was finished and last touched at 11:30am of December 13th. I am not requesting for my essay to be submitted and evaluated as if it was handed in on time as I understand I made a mistake and forgot to hand it in on time. I am however requesting that the late policy be adjusted so that I received a substantial late penalty as most courses enforce.

I am willing to accept severe late penalties. I will accept essentially any deduction such that is not a complete 0. I believe based on the grounds that I can prove my essay was finished before the deadline, and that amidst the pressure and stress of other exams I forgot to make the submission on onQ as a result of being seriously stressed out by other exams, I should be allowed to still have my essay evaluated subject to a typical late submission penalty. I can supply screenshots of the last edits made to my essay from Microsoft word's edit history.

I truly believe that the the combination of the effects exam periods and expectations can have
on one's mental health and the fact that the essay was finished before the deadline, and subsequently submitted 16 hours later a penalty of 0 is unjust. Such circumstances regarding personal mental health and the proof of completion should render an adjustment to the late policy that would allow my essay to be evaluated and penalized as Professor MacKay sees fit.

Liam Wolfe.
