Petition Letter

Petition Letter: I am appealing to drop SOCY 388 past the deadline due to extenuating circumstances beyond my control.
In grade 2, I was diagnosed with some learning disabilities that have been controlled, for the most part with, medications and exercise. Although I have managed to discover alternative methods to augment my learning as well as I have been given accommodations throughout my academic life, I have noticed that I have increasingly experienced bouts of extreme anxiety and depression with it becoming quite unbearable at times this term. I tried many methods to cope (exercise, rest, talking to my family and friends) but it seemed nothing was really working as I was feeling overwhelmed with the pressure of completing the requirements of my courses, so I retuned home to Toronto on Monday November 1, 2019 to ask for help from my parents and my medical doctor. As soon as I arrived home my parents arranged for Medical and Counselling appointments. In addition, we contacted the Queens University Wellness center and were instructed to complete the Application for Extension due to Extenuating Circumstances as I had missed some essay deadlines. I contacted all my professors, completed the application and obtained the required information from my medical doctor (see attached) with my parents assistance. During my appointment with my medical doctor, she acknowledged that a side effect of one of the medications that I take daily, is increased anxiety and depression that may need to be addressed with additional medication and counselling to deal with these side effects. It was decided that I would continue the counselling and meet with my medical doctor again when I was home for Christmas to see if additional medication is required .After a week at home and missing all my classes I decided that I really did not want to miss any more classes, as that was giving me anxiety in itself, I returned to school in Kingston with the hope that I could complete my five classes.
Upon returning to school I continued my counselling appointments, went to see an Accommodations advisor, and tried my best to complete all my course requirements. Unfortunately, I began to feel that it was all too overwhelming and decided that in order to save my other four courses I needed to stop working on the assignments for SOCY388 and I would not write the exam. The reason I selected this course was that I felt it was the most logical course to drop as I was struggling the most in this course to complete the requirements. In addition, I immediately contacted my parents and medical doctor to discuss the medication to address the anxiety and depression. My appointment is on Friday December 20th at 9:30am.
I want to end by saying that I really enjoy being at Queens University in the Sociology Program. My hope and desire is to obtain a Bachelor of Arts (Honours), Major Sociology.
I am to more than willing to provide any further information required to officially remove this course as an incomplete from my record.
I look forward to your response. Thank you, Nicole McKIssick
