Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,

I hope this letter finds you well.
I am appealing to drop the course GNDS 120 (Fall, 2019).
The reason for this appeal is because I had injured myself on September 29th, 2019 by falling off of my long board and spraining my right wrist badly.
I then went to Hotel Dieu Hospital directly after the fall and they had treated my injury as a Scaphoid Fracture.
They recommended to me that I return to the hospital within 2-3 weeks to have it x-rayed again.
The injury to my wrist became more than just an inconvenience for everyday life and further extended to difficulty with my studies when I realized that I could not take notes on my computer or by writing due to my inability to properly turn my wrist.
I then went to the Student Wellness Center and was able to successfully able to get academic accommodation after a meeting with the Occupational Therapist Tess Grant on the October 2nd, 2019.
Thanks to the accommodations, I was able to get extensions on papers that were due for my classes as well as prepare for tests.
These extensions would help with my other courses but unfortunately were unable to help me with GNDS 120.
The reason for this is due to the fact that the readings and length of the papers due for this class were much longer than for my other class¿¿ papers.
Though I had been very careful and had been giving my wrist lots of rest, my symptoms were not getting better.
Because of this, I continued to seek out accommodation which led to me returning to Hotel Dieu Hospital in an attempt to get my wrist x-rayed on the October 30th, 2019.
I then decided to return to the hospital.
The reason for me returning to the hospital 2 weeks later than recommended was due to the fact that I was waiting to see whether or not my wrist would be healed with more time.
Another circumstance as to why I was having difficulty with the class was due to my decision to provide support to a close friend of mine who has been having very significant health and personal issues.
It grew to the point that I was staying with him at his own house to continuously keep an eye on him and provide care and be there for him.
The reason why I did not drop this course before the first of November is because I thought that my wrist would have healed before my assignments started to add up.
As the term had gone on, the situation for my friend continued to become worse and his health became more of a concerning factor.
Throughout this process, I had been in contact with my GNDS professor regarding the work I had been behind on and I was sure to keep her updated on details.
As time went on however, the volume of deadlines made it difficult to try and catch up on work.
I then let her know that I would be attempting to late drop the class to which she responded by saying that she is supportive of this decision on November 11th, 2019.
As of right now, I do plan to retake this course in either the following year or during the summer in the near future.
I have been and am currently still been in contact with Student Wellness Services regarding both my friend¿¿s health and my own mental health throughout this situation and I plan to stay connected moving forward.
