Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To: Associate Dean of Studies,

This letter is a regarding my request for an Aegrotat standing for POLS 331 and POLS 384 courses that I am currently enrolled in for the Fall 2019 term and was unable to complete the final examination for on the required date. Earlier this semester in Oct 18th 2019, my grandfather who lived with me in my home passed away unexpectedly due to suffering a brain aneurism and I applied for academic considerations for all of my courses with the help of Allison LaVinge bereavement counsellor who provided me additional time till the end of December to take time to be with my family, recollect my thoughts and continue to work on myself and my courses one step at a time at my own pace to recover and get back on track. I have significantly been impacted by my grandfather¿¿s death and in the midst of it all I was still fulfilling all course assignments and wrote the deferred mid-term examinations. My professors for these courses are all aware of my current situation and how it emotionally impacted me and significantly affected my performance in my academics as a result of bereavement. I have been working hard to catch up on missed mid-terms, assignments and examinations that I have now all caught up on. I have two deferred final examinations left to write in this upcoming new semester that mentally I am unable to fulfill and as a result I am applying for an aegrotat standing for these two courses as
I am severely depressed from my grandfather¿¿s loss and unable to write the required final examination, I have fulfilled all other course work and have even written the deferred mid-term examinations for both courses as I was still dealing with my situation, family, rituals, and coping with the loss. It has been significantly hard for me to manage and I discussed with my professor Christian Breede who has also provided a letter of support as he suggested I apply for aegrotat standing because of my situation. My Professors have stated that the best recommended coruse of action would be to consider applying for an Aegrotat standing due to my mental health having priority over course work and for me to concentrate, focus and get better in health. I have attached the supporting documentation from Professor Breede, obituary documentation and supporting documentation from Allison LaVinge from the FAS. I am a student with a disability, and I am registered with QSAS, these accommodations were in place to assist me however the death of my grandfather has really hindered me and impacted my ability to complete the required final examinations for this course. Throughout coping with a mental disability and a signficiant bereavement of someone very close and near to me, I have still made a lot of effort and done a lot of hard work in each course to continue to put my hard work into the assignments and required course work to fulfill the courses successfully. have managed to pull through and work through the other courses however it was a lot to manage and my professors are aware of my mental state due to this circumstance. I have taken the responsibility to contact them and make them aware of my situation prior to deadlines and informed them that I am not in a position to be as diligent as before and not in a position to write the required final examinations. I am grieving a huge loss and given my extenuating circumstance, I truly ask if you can please provide me the opportunity to have Aegrotat standing for POLS 331 and POLS 384. I have regularly attended classes, submitted all the course assignments, done the mid-term examinations throughout dealing with a significant loss of a loved one. I understand that an Aegrotat standing is not automatically assigned and I am kindly asking for a consideration on both medical and compassionate grounds for POLS 331 and POLS 384. I have provided valid documentation in support of my request and have submitted it to my application. I thank you sincerely for your time to review my request for Aegrotat standing.
