Petition Letter
Petition Letter: I wish to appeal in order to add the course FILM 340 Advertising and Consumer Culture, even though it is after the add deadline. I was previously enrolled in FILM 214, and planned to drop it after the first class, as I decided the course content wasn't for me. I researched the policies on dropping and adding courses, and came under the presumption that Jan. 17 was the deadline to drop or add any classes without financial penalty. I decided to wait past this deadline and give FILM 214 a further chance to see if I really wanted to drop it, and if I did, I would do so by accepting the financial penalty. I have since dropped the course and have tried to enrol in FILM 340 instead, only to find out that Jan. 17 was the absolute deadline to add new courses, unless I wanted to go through this process of appeals. I was not aware that this was the process of adding new courses after the Jan. 17 deadline, and had I known that, I would have dropped FILM 214 and enrolled in FILM 340 much earlier than the enrolment deadline, as I would really like to stay enrolled in 5 courses each semester, to stand by and succeed in the academic plan I have set out for myself. I worry that if I am unable to pick up a 5th course this semester, it would mean that I would have to add a 6th course in a future semester, which would have the potential to limit my success in regards to my academic ability, progress, and overall learning at Queen's University. It would be very much appreciated if I would be allowed to enrol myself in FILM 340 this winter semester.
Academic Plan
Academic Plan: In the future, I can definitely make some personal adjustments in order to succeed in my studies by doing more research into the policies that Queen's University has in regards to adding or dropping courses. I was uninformed in this decision making progress due to a lack of substantial research, as the conclusion I came to early on was not a correct one, and resulted in issues regarding my desire to take 5 courses each semester and fulfill the academic workload I have set out in my own personal academic plan. In the future I need to become more knowledgeable about Queen's academic policies so that I can avoid issues like these in the future.
