Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean (Studies):

My name is Suthaharan Thanabalasingam and my student number is 05964322. I¿¿ve returned back to Queen¿¿s University as a mature student to complete a second degree in BSc Math with the goal of achieving higher grades and the mathematical foundation to have a successful Masters of Data Science application in 2020-2021. I am appealing my ¿F¿¿ grade in MATH 280 from the Fall 2019 term.

The evaluation for this course was comprised of 4 quizzes (worth 10), two midterms (worth 25 each) and a final exam (worth 40). Unfortunately, as a result of a difficult semester both personally and physically, I was only able to complete 2 of the 4 quizzes and I was unable to write the two midterms and final exam.

For the two midterms and final exam, I was given academic consideration because of my extenuating circumstances with supporting documentation. Last year I lost my grandmother, two friends in their 30s and I also suffered an injury during the final exam period. Unfortunately, my professor, having received my approved academic consideration for the midterms and final exam, submitted an 'F' final grade in the course. I¿¿m looking to appeal this decision based on the Academic Regulation for the Faculty of Arts and Science, section 10.3.4 that would allow me to have an 'IN' in the course with a deferred examination.

Further, given that my appeal for an ¿IN¿¿ status is granted and as part of a future success plan, I would like to write the deferred final exam for MATH 280 in the following Spring/Summer semester. This request is based on the limited time I now have available to successfully write a deferred final exam without compromising my current courses.
