Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Johanne Bénard and/or Dr. Hugh Horton,

I am appealing the grade I received on a midterm examination in CLST 201. I had been ill for the week prior to the examination and was therefore unable to study adequately and to the best of my abilities. I attempted to write the exam and, after receiving a rather poor grade, I emailed the professor requesting either a make-up exam or some sort of extra credit assignment. The professor informed me that there was nothing he could do, as I had already written the midterm, but that we would see how I did on the final. Unfortunately, I did not do too well on the final examination either, but when I emailed the professor, asking to revisit the idea of an extra credit assignment, he told me once again that there was nothing he could do. Had I been able to study for the midterm exam, I would have been able to do much better in the overall course. As a fourth year sociology major, this was the only classics course I have ever taken and it is having a significant effect on my GPA. In the future, should such extenuating circumstances arise, I will try my best to inform the instructor as early as possible so as to avoid writing an exam unprepared and to avoid any confusion over extra-credit or make up assignments. I hope to attend law school upon graduation, and being better prepared, both physically as well as mentally, would certainly help me achieve that goal.
