Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Association Dean (Academics),

I am appealing to drop ENGL 271 (Winter, 2020) even though it is past the February 28th deadline. My anxiety has progressively worsened since Reading Week and has impacted my ability to complete the workload in six courses (5 ARTSCI courses and 1 Education course). As I am unable to complete my work when my anxiety is too high, I sought help from my psychiatrist and a counsellor and my psychiatrist recommended that I lessen my workload by dropping this course. ENGL 271 has caused me the most anxiety as it has the largest amount of assignments due during this time in the semester. Further, this class is participation based and I struggle to meet the expectations of the course due to my mental illness. I did not drop the course by the February 28th deadline because I was trying to cope with my workload, but I was unable to control my anxiety as the assignments piled up. I thought I would be able to handle the workload using my calming strategies; however, my anxiety reached a peak level on the weekend following the deadline, February 29th and March 1st. I have a high GPA (3.9) and I was doing well in the class; however, the workload became too much to handle. I strive to maintain a high GPA and believe that if I drop ENGL 271, I will be able to achieve high marks in my other classes because I will have more time to dedicate to the remaining workload. Also, dropping this course would allow my anxiety to lessen which would enable me to complete the work at hand. To make up for this lost credit, I plan to take a course in the summer. Next year, I am not required to take an Education course and, therefore, I will only have 5 credits per semester. I will continue to be under the care of a psychiatrist and receive regular counselling. As much as I wanted to keep my full workload, I agree with my psychiatrist that it is best to drop ENGL 271. Thank you so much for your compassion, understanding and time to reveal my appeal.

From,
Megan McLean
