Petition Letter
Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,
I am writing to you in order to appeal to some of my course outcomes. Over the past few years, I have been experiencing some mental health issues which have impeded my ability to perform academically to the best of my ability. These issues include, but are not exclusive to, depression and anxiety.
The nature of my illnesses prevented me from being able to fully participate in and be successful in my academics.
Severe fatigue, inability to focus and concentrate, obsessive thoughts, and anxiety attacks at times directly affected my academic success. My condition was chronic with periods of severe and intensely debilitating symptoms.
I am appealing only specific courses because with my illness, I was unable to properly focus and make important decisions regarding my education. At times, my anxiety became so acute that I often struggled to attend class which affected my participation and learning. Even with some advice from Academic Advising, my own personal thoughts and anxieties prevented rational decision making to support my studies.
Due to my illness, I was unable to fulfill the full course load requirements and have since been trying to adjust my schedule to be more successful.
Currently, I am a patient at Markham Stouffville Hospital with the Outpatient Mental Health Department, where I have a Nurse Practitioner who is in charge of my care. I have taken steps to become physically and mentally healthy as well as reducing my course load, and am looking into summer and online courses if necessary.
This is an ongoing process that I am committed to managing, with personal support and exploring further University resources. My goal is to achieve the academic success I aspired to when I began at Queen's University.
Thank you for your understanding,
Michael Bureau
