Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Stephenson,
I am appealing to drop ASTR 102 (Winter, 2020). My name is Maren Catt and I am currently in my third year of a Bachelor of Science with Honours, Specialization in Geological Sciences. I am on track to graduate in 2021 and currently have 7.5 units above the requirement for my degree.
I had taken ASTR 102 as an elective that would not affect my academics and would be of interest. As of the drop date I believed I was advancing in ASTR 102 with a good grade. We have assignments due each week that amount to a small percentage of my grade and have had one lab so far. We had received one mark back for a small lab by the drop date and I had excelled. A week past the drop date I received my second mark in the course for the midterm and realized I was not in the good standing that I had thought. This midterm was worth a great deal (35) of my grade for the course.
The day I wrote this midterm I had one other midterm and a few reports due. This other midterm and the reports were for geology courses I am taking that are required for my degree. The mark for the midterm and the marks for the reports were lower than my standard. I can only attribute this decrease to the lack of time spent on them as I was stretched between these courses and my ASTR 102 midterm. The time spent studying for this midterm and doing the small assignments took away from the time required for my geology courses.
As well, I am interested in attending graduate school and completing my master's. To do this I am required to have a good GPA and I am concerned this course may impact my GPA, hindering my ability to attend graduate school.
I am appealing to drop ASTR 102 as three of my courses this term are required for my degree and the other course has few assignments spread throughout the term that I have currently excelled in and it has not taken away from the courses required for my degree.
If I am granted the appeal this would allow me to focus on my other courses that require the extra time I currently do not have. I would spend the extra time studying for other courses, writing proper lab reports that I am proud of and completing assignments with ease instead of rushing through them stressed. This extra time would alleviate a lot of stress and anxiety I currently have towards my geology courses and my future in geology. I am asking to drop the course instead of deferring the exam or asking to submit work late as this course does not count towards my degree and I am currently on track to graduate with more credits than required.
