Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
I am requesting a waive of the 21 day appeal deadline, as I was not in the right state to bring forth an academic appeal within that time frame. In July of 2014 I was diagnosed with severe depression and anxiety. Although this was when my mental illness was identified, I had been dealing with its symptoms since January 2014. Throughout this time I had been suffering from frequent anxiety attacks and countless thoughts of suicide. Due to the fact that I preformed so poorly in the 2014 winter semester, I decided to take on summer courses in order to improve my GPA, but this was overwhelming and only made matters worse. After an ongoing struggle to focus on my academic career I made the difficult decision of removing myself from this environment for the fall 2014 term so that I could find ways to cope and function with my illness. Granting that this is a long healing process, I am happy to say that my time away from academics has allowed me to reflect on my goals and create better strategies towards my success, not only an Queen's, but in all aspects of my life. I have come back this semester as a more optimistic and confident person, ready to deal with situations such as this.
In order to avoid this from happening again, I plan to continue the medical routine suggested by my doctor and take a smaller course load. I will also keep track of course drop deadlines in case I begin to feel overwhelmed. I am certain that the combination of these factors will lead to success in the duration of my studies.
I look back at the struggles I have faced and I am thankful for the ways they have helped me grow, but I do not wish to be defined by that period in my life. That being said, I hope you take my request into consideration and give me the opportunity to propose an academic appeal.
